DRUG TEST POLICY TO GET NEW VOTE

LIBERAL, Kan. - The drug-testing policy for Liberal schools will get
another vote Aug. 20 by the Liberal Unified School District 480 school board.

The policy, approved May 21, would require random drug tests of its middle
school and high school students who participate in extracurricular
activities, according to Globe-News files.

With classes scheduled to start Thursday, the school board will consider
whether to rescind or keep the policy on Aug. 20, superintendent Kerry
Roberts said.

Under the policy, the district will randomly select for testing 12 students
from Liberal High School and three students from each of the two middle
schools every two weeks, according to Globe-News files.

Parents will need to sign a permission form for their children to
participate, according to files. Parents' refusal to sign will forfeit
their student's right to participate in extracurricular activities.

Some parents already have turned in consent forms, Roberts said, but he
wasn't sure how many.
