HEMP CAR IN NELSON TODAY
Where there's hemp there is usually a cloud of smoke, but there won't be
any when a hemp-powered car comes to Nelson this Friday. The car fuelled
by hemp seed oil runs cleaner than its gas guzzling counterparts.
The 1983 Mercedes Benz turbo diesel wagon has been touring across the
United States and is making a few stops in western Canada. It will make a
pit stop near Holy Smoke Culture Shop located at 512 Hendryx Street today.
It started its journey to raise awareness of hemp as an alternative fuel
source in Washington D.C. on July 4, 2001. Part owner of Holy Smoke Paul
DeFelice arranged to bring the hemp mobile to Nelson and says awareness of
hemp and marijuana's benefits has been growing.
"The awareness is increasing everyday," says DeFelice. "People are
becoming aware of marijuana's medical uses and how hemp has many industrial
uses. It's amazing one plant can do so much."
Aside from a few new hoses, the hemp car has not been modified. Though hemp
seed oil has proven to be a viable energy source, it is illegal to
cultivate in the United States. Hemp can be cultivated for fuel, clothing,
and food sources in Canada but DeFelice would also like to see marijuana
and hemp completely legalized.
"It needs to be legalized, not just decriminalized," says DeFelice.
He says government barriers have prevented hemp from reaching its full
potential.
Another benefit of Hemp seed oil is that it is more environmentally
friendly than other fuels.
"It's a good fuel source," says DeFelice. "It's renewable and has less
sulphur in it than regular fuel that makes for horrendous exhaust."
The hemp car is attempting to set a world distance record of 10,000 miles
for a vehicle using hemp for fuel. People are invited to stop by Holy
Smoke on Friday to check out the hemp powered car before it travels on to
Christina Lake on Aug. 12. Project Hemp car is scheduled to wrap up its
tour and return to Washington on Oct. 2.
Its progress and more information about the car can be viewed on its
website, www.hempcar.org/
