BESMIRCHING A HERO

Excuse me, but putting your life on the line each and every day is
not fun and games. It is life and death. These brave men (and women),
especially the courage of Roosevelt City's Police Chief Cecil Gurr,
saved the life of at least one officer, if not more officers and
citizens.

It is a travesty for James V. Roach (Forum, July 24) to put down such
a committed man of law. Abstention is the only way to control
methamphetamine. How could anyone not stand for abstaining from a
substance that causes such erratic and violent behavior? One only has
to read the daily paper to be convinced that this drug is not a
recreational, harmless drug, but a dangerous mind-altering chemical
that causes complete destruction and disregard for human life.

Chief Gurr had firsthand knowledge of that. The man who killed him
would never have done so, had he not been deranged and become insane
because of the use of meth. It goes way beyond addiction; this drug
is more dangerous than any street drug available. As for prohibition
causing his fate, this is ludicrous. Gurr is a hero, one who gave his
life protecting others, like you and me.
