RYAN'S HEMP VETO
The Illinois Drug Education Alliance applauds Gov. George Ryan's strong
stand against illegal drugs. He vetoed a bill that called for the study of
the mind-altering drug cannabis sativa/hemp plant. This action demonstrates
his commitment to the youth of Illinois and to those of us who work in the
drug prevention field by maintaining a strong "no-use" message.
The veto also sends a message to those who favor legalization that Illinois
is not fertile ground for drugs.
Our alliance recognizes that the sponsors of the hemp bill were interested
in finding an alternative crop for farmers. We also understand that those
interested in the legalization of marijuana held a very high interest in
the passage of this bill.
Priss Parmenter
While some saw the bill as a harmless study, we know that it was merely the
first step. We appreciate the fact that Ryan had the foresight to recognize
the potential dangers and safeguarded our youth.
