COLOMBIANS INDICTED IN HIGH-SEAS DRUG BUST
TAMPA, Fla. -- Ten Colombians were named in an indictment unsealed
Wednesday that alleges that they transported 81/2 tons of cocaine aboard a
fishing trawler. Coast Guard officials said the Aug. 2 bust on the Pacific
Ocean was the sixth-largest U.S. drug seizure on the high seas.
Two frigates based at Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville took the Coast
Guard law-enforcement team to the trawler, which was 850 miles off
Colombia's coast. The Colombian navy had tipped off U.S. officials to the
boat's cargo.
More than 350 bales of cocaine were stashed in hidden compartments on the
81-foot boat, the Coast Guard said. The boat was turned over to the
Panamanian government as the U.S. vessels came through the Panama Canal.
