MESSAGE TO COUNTY BOARD BY WCTU PRESIDENT IN SUPPORT OF DARE

Here is the message, in essence, I delivered to the Task Force on Drug
Abuse Resistance Education, which I now address to the full county board:

At a time when drinking is saturating the media, radio, TV, colleges etc.,
enticing young people to indulge, they need a sane voice to help them
realize they can say "no" and live a profitable life.

Even some ministers say that the use of alcohol is OK, just not the abuse.
Well, only users become abusers.

Our youth need to know that drinking is not all fun and games - some of the
"fun" includes falling off balconies, hammering truck windows with a
baseball bat, heaving-up at midnight and driving drunk and killing people.

And what about their one-in-10 chance of becoming an alcoholic?

May the county board members keep in mind that our youth have a right to
know it's OK to say "no thank you" to alcohol and other drugs and vote to
continue funding DARE.

Thank you, Mr. Shook, for mentioning my name in connection with the Woman's
Christian Temperance Union, as many people now know that we are very much
alive. We are not BADD, SADD or MADD - we are GLAD, practicing Gracious
Living without Alcohol or other Drugs. And we do not "go with the flow" as
white water rafters do.

We educate children and youth through contests, videos, posters and
pamphlets, and educate adults through literature booths and more. We meet
at 12:30 p.m. the third Monday of each month for refreshments and a meeting
at the Salvation Army in Waukesha. Visitors, both men and women, are welcome.
