DRUG DANGERS BROUGHT HOME TO PARENTS

Hornsea: Civic leaders are urging people to 'shop' known drug dealers to
the police as part of a crackdown.

Their plea follows the success of a newsletter sent out to town parents to
inform them of the dangers of cannabis, Ecstasy and alcohol.

Supportive town councillors are delighted by the success of Hornsea Drug
and Alcohol Forums initiative.

Town Mayor Councillor Ian Smith said:"Anything that helps to protect our
young people from drug and alcohol abuse must be good for the town. "I
don't think Hornsea's problems are any worse than other East Riding
towns, but everyone has a role to play in stopping the use of these
substances.

"The newsletter has helped to alert people to the dangers. Now they must
report known drug dealers to the police to stop cannabis and Ecstasy
getting on to the streets."

Cllr Smith said if the whole community joined the venture, it would go a
long way to stamping out drug abuse in Hornsea. Geoff Ogden, co-ordinator
of the East Riding and Drug Action Teams, told the Mail that many parents
had contacted members of the forum to thank them for producing the letter.

He said: We have had informal contact with a number of parents and
residents who appreciated the effort we put in to informing them about the
dangers of such drugs.

"Many people told us they were unaware of the possible effects on young
people until they received the letter."
