POLICY PERILS

Re: "Drug Policy Mess'' Aug. 23, I too must express my concern about
the drug testing policy recently adopted for athletes in Sullivan
County Schools. As with any invasion of privacy, there is risk.
Although some good may come from the policy, my concern is for those
otherwise good and decent, productive youth who will get caught in
this web due to youthful indiscretion.

The potential is there to permanently damage their future; this may
outweigh what good may come from the policy.

We somehow feel righteous when the other person has the scarlet
letter stamped on his chest, but it's quite a different story when
it's one of our own, particularly when it's a child.
