CURBING NIGHTCLUBS, BUT NOT DRUG USE
To the Editor:
It is no surprise that the recent closing of the Twilo nightclub in
Manhattan did nothing to reduce Ecstasy overdoses (news article, Sept. 4).
There will always be a Twilo, a Limelight or "next big club," and most
likely drugs will be present at these venues. History tells us that this is
a problem that will not go away.
A much more effective way of dealing with potential drug use is to look at
ways to reduce harm and potential risk. Access to water, "chill-out" areas
and access to medical help if needed are crucial to preventing overdoses.
Twilo should not be criticized for having hired ambulances to wait outside
its door, but instead should be applauded.
