DRUG TESTS SMOOTH LEARNING

The mayor is supporting drug testing in the schools; the ACLU is opposed.
The mayor is right.

Drug testing is the best deterrent for young people against drug use. It
gives them an out, an easy way to say no. That is why it should be done in
as many schools as possible.

We do it here at De La Salle. In fact, we were the pioneers in this area. As
a result, we have a safe and calm school.

We believe all students have a right to learn in an atmosphere that is free
of drug dealers, people hanging out at the schoolyard perimeter waiting for
deals to go down and students who are barely learning while under the
influence.

We tried it and it works, and it works in nine other schools in the area.

Yvonne R. Gelpi, President
De La Salle High School, New Orleans
