CONVICTIONS IN DRUG OVERDOSE DEATH

The mystery of a Chilliwack man found dead in a Little Fort, B.C. ditch has
been laid to rest.

Kamloops major crime Mounties have determined that Dean Patrick Crosby, 31,
died of a self-inflicted drug overdose, and his companions, two Chilliwack
women, have been convicted of interfering with human remains.

After Crosby died, they rolled his body out of the car in a remote area 45
minutes north of Kamloops. Fortunately for Crosby's family, tourists stopped
when their car broke down at the same spot, otherwise he might never have
been found, according to Kamloops Const. Dave Helgason, of the southeast
district major crimes unit.

"There's a legal and a moral obligation in this," Helgason said. "If you and
I are out fishing and our friend dies we'd probably take him to the
hospital."

The women displayed "a lack of judgment," Helgason said, adding there were
some indications they felt remorse, in that they plead guilty to charges.

At first police were treating Crosby's death as a homicide investigation,
Helgason said. Then forensic evidence pointed to a self-inflicted,
accidental overdose.

Ironically at almost the same time as Crosby's body was found, 100 Mile
House RCMP stopped a car, found to belong to his common-law partner, driven
by two women from Chilliwack.

100 Mile House Mounties confiscated the car, but not knowing about the
death, they released the two women, who disappeared.

After enlisting the help of Chilliwack RCMP, charges were laid against the
two women, who were not easily found. Police eventually caught up with them
in Maple Ridge.

Angela Selene Dickie and Gail Denise Gilpin, both of Chilliwack, plead
guilty to improperly interfering with human remains in Kamloops Provincial
Court. They were sentenced to one year in custody.
