POLICE KILL DRUG SUSPECT AS HIS CAR DRAGS OFFICER

Gunfire In Bojangles' Parking Lot; Clayton Lieutenant Dies Later

CLAYTON -- A drug suspect was shot and killed by officers Friday at a
fast-food restaurant after he ran over and fatally injured a police officer
trying to stop him.

Lt. Monica Carey of the Clayton Police Department died about 11:55a.m. at
WakeMed, said hospital spokeswoman Blanche Royal.

Police Chief Gary Ragland said the unidentified suspect backed his car into
Carey and dragged her about 30feet in the parking lot of a Bojangles'
restaurant on U.S.70. The suspect had backed up in an attempt to escape,
Ragland said.

Officers shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Ragland said.

"When the suspect would not stop his vehicle, shots were fired," Ragland
said. "He was armed with a vehicle, dragging an officer underneath. He
would not stop."

Authorities conducted the bust about 10a.m. Friday after receiving a tip.
Police from Morehead City and Clayton, as well as Wake County sheriff's
deputies, were involved, Ragland said. Clayton is about 10miles south of
Raleigh.

Authorities believed a drug exchange was to take place in the parking lot.
About $1,000 of heroin was found in the suspect's car, police said. Ragland
said the suspect's identity wasn't immediately known.

Darrell Sauls of Clayton was at the drive-through at the time of the
shooting. He said he had placed his order when plainclothes officers
approached the restaurant.

He then heard eight to 10shots fired. People in the drive-through line were
told to stay where they were, he said.

"We froze in place and maybe there were just a couple more shots," said
Sauls, who did not see who was hit because the building partially blocked
his view.

"My heart was in my throat. When I heard the shots ring out, I could only
think what an unbelievable week this is."
