THE DISTRICT'S HABITS

More than one in 10 D.C. residents has a big problem: addiction. That's the
finding of a door-to-door survey of District households, the first of its
kind. About half the addicts named alcohol as the monkey on their backs.
Marijuana was the most commonly used illegal drug, followed by cocaine.

Interviews of children ages 12 to 17 turned up grown-up drug problems.
One-sixth of the youths said they had consumed alcohol in the previous month.

Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) has set a goal in attacking the problem:
reducing the number of addicts -- now about 60,000 -- by 25,000 by 2005.
The main tool will be treatment of alcohol and drug abusers.
