IRANIAN OFFICIALS BOAST OF SUSPECTED DRUG TRAFFICKERS KILLINGS

Iranian officials are boasting police have killed 125 suspected drug
traffickers and bandits in the north-east of the country near the border
with Afghanistan over the past 12 months.

A police spokesman has told the state-run news agency, the purges were the
result of 156 operations in which police seized 1,544 kilograms of various
drugs and 113 firearms.

Iran is a major transit point for drug producers in Afghanistan and
Pakistan and the markets of Europe and the Gulf, with an estimated 2,000 of
drugs smuggled through the country every year.

The Government says about 3,100 police officers have lost their lives
trying to fight the drug trade over the past 20 years.
