CORRECTIONS CRACKING DOWN ON PRISON DRUGS
The S.C. Department of Corrections is redirecting its resources in an
attempt to crack down on the amount of drugs and contraband entering the
state's prisons. The department placed internal affairs, drug-finding dogs,
drug interdiction team and inmate drug testing program under the inspector
general's office, said Gary D. Maynard, the agency's director. Maynard is
hoping the move will help investigators find out how drugs get into prisons.
More than 60 percent of inmates have some type of chemical dependency, and
25 percent are serving time for drug charges, according to the department.
