i usually generate because it's easier to control after :D you can do effects ON the noise, ie pattern/gradient overlay or whatever, which makes for some nice flexibility... layer duplicates and overlays... etc :)

ahhh you added noise onto an existing layer? tsk tsk.. :b

i always have a layer for noise, and compare it against white background to see proper spectrum before applying it to something :D
