first and foremost im happy scott chose to refrain cuz all this shit is pointless

and chels, funny i dont hear any laughter... thats probably cuz its too far, coming from behind a comp screen and all

my point being i dont really care

to the point of this thread, i supported a feature request that i think is or at least could potentially be useful, even suggested to code it, and the answers i get are indifference, regress, and feeble attempts at comedy.

oh well, i guess its much more comfortable to sit on one's ass doing shit all and in order not to feel too shitty about it, shoot off remarks at those who move theirs...

i think heather's suggestion is good

not like its hard to make a filter

noah, i am assuming your message arrives as an array with ["msgid"] ["userid"] ["content"] ["timestamp" or something like that... but you know what i mean and if your system handles it differently its still applicable..

-----------

// incoming mesage arrived, time to store msg in dbase

if(!in_array($msg["user_id"],$blocked_ids)
{

// message storing code goes here
}

--------------------
and to build $blocked_ids you can just put a "B" letter next to messages along with D and it'll add the sender's userid to that array which would be stored for each user along with user prefs, you could put the B instead of the E because you cant edit messages anyway and its grayed out

good times vbro good times :)

i used to courier a bit, but then ran my own BBS (small, it was called Thorny Crag, dont ask haha) and had a couple of friends who curried the stuff and I just sat back and made ANSI/PCB/ASCii art for my bbs and enjoyed the flow of //4r3Z... i still have my pcboard with all the utils somewhere.. and i remember bumping into the chat logs like a year back, it was hilarious to read them :)

never used boat connections, that sounds cool :) i used PBXes and boxed though... never got a bill but stopped when ma bell switched to c7...

as usual, this threads original purpose derails into oblivion....

that seems to be a trend that never goes away :)

see, i wasnt trying to reform a message board, nor diss anyone by calling them sheep, nor say anything about OTHER message boards that is for sure.

i was simply trying to get people to remember more trends that we could all recall and laugh about or at least raise an eyebrow.

although the subject SHOULD be thought about seriously, it's totally not worth ARGUING about.

so i leave you fellas to your sandbox... im out unless i remember some cool trends.

PEOPLE might make jungle THEIR trend, but that does not mean the music, style, or culture is. For one, I liked jungle/drum n bass way back, like it now, and will prolly stay liking it. At least me and a couple other ravewavers I know were down with da massive before most of the crowd here started hanging out at IDJs and all (which is probably because mah bro Galaksy is doing a great promo job and is a perfect example of how one can be a great DJ, influence alot of people with music and action, and still have no shred of conceit or elitism in him).

Then again, this could apply to anything I guess, I mean even the food threads may have merit when looked at separately.

So I guess you could say "being into jungle" has been a ravewave trend for the past several months, but it depends on people's reasons for being into jungle. If they are because they genuinely like it, then maybe a trend brought them there but it can't be called trend following anymore. If they come because others do it, then they'll leave just as fast and, well, are sheep :b

totally. elitism is nothing but people not being comfortable enough with themselves to be comfortable with being nice to others. often its kinda like they put up walls of hostility before others do the same to them, kinda like "get ya first!" thing.

influence wise, well sure, sometimes, but i think everyone influences everyone to some extent, and even if it looks like person A had REALLY influenced person B, it often turns out that A was more changed by the experience than B, who usually finds someone else to follow, while A gets to sit and ponder what the hell happened, not realizing that B's passive feedback is the cause for all those odd thoughts and shit.

the above paragraph might have been more coherent if i could reread it but i gotta run back to work

more on topic: "post-party-review-first" trend. decayed a while ago, now nobody cares :)

i dont think elitism can be deemend a trend, since it is a trait of a community that usually surfaces after the initial excitement of the community being something new and different fades. i totally think it sucks and we should do without it, but some people will always have insecurities that make then have cravings for that superior feel, cravings that can be more or less satisfied by being an ass/bitch to someone newer to the community and say in the back of the head "ha! ive been here longer. i know the ropes. im COOL. that person sure ain't. yay." or something along those lines

not to be taken wrong, I got nothing against steve, his lingo, OR ben. im simply depicting trends

and Jeff: youre being off topic, cuz the trend of nobody caring results in nobody posting and is therefore of no interest for the purposes of this thread

being a lurker lately, my observation of the recent food trend gaining ground, i think it's time to state the obvious. PEOPLE ARE SHEEP :) trends dominate any community/society and on a micro scale, this lil hangout Noah provides us too. thread trends, avatar trends, sig trends, catchword/expression trends, sheeit, one could hardly keep track. a notable feature of a ravewave trend is that once started, most/all the hardcore posters will get slowly suckered into it, and new people will think thats how things are normally here and therefore add fuel to the fire. trends decay over time, which depends on how "workable with" the trend was (i mean, on some topics there just isnt fucking much to say), on whether how soon a new dominant trend pops in, and a bunch of other things. rarely, a few major trends can coexist and even support eachother (e.g. Tipsy avatars/ happy hardcore references).

another interesting point is all along those predominant trends, there is always the argumentative/hate threads, which surface mostly inbetween trends, or when a trend decays.

is it just me, or the obvious conclusion is that people turn to hate when bored?

anyway, without further ado, i figured it'd be interesting to list those :b

in no particular order, off the top of my head (i dont claim to remember everything, or even most, so feel free to add)

* other peoples avatars
* "k thnx"
* food threads
* threads that say thread
* tipsys avatars
* pats avatars
* lips avatars
* threads that say people's names/nicks
* avatars of other ppl on this board
* actors avatars
* dj karl marx lingo (mostly propagated by ben)
* south park avatars
* chicken threads
* "gossip on X & Y" threads (recurring, X & Y variable)
* fake accounts
* anti-meth
* pro-meth
* political events discussion which is usually turned into gruesome comedy
* threads that talk about trends (such as this one)

i know there was tons more, but i gotta get back to work. feel free to add.

last thing. if you really feel like being off-topic, pretty pweeze start a new thread.

w0rd!
