i un-classily bowed out of showing up for this event and let a couple of good friends down by doing so, very sorry for that, but my services were not lacking in vain, there was another party type thing going on, shame on me for double booking and thinking it would function... Im sad I missed this, it sounded mighty promissing, and by all accounts was a total success, big ups to all involved, congrats on a solid event!

it actually has less to do with our country's size and more to do with its population... the reason why we can't compete price wise with other contries for cell phone technology is because our market is so small, same goes for our infrastructure... but we are merrily moving along, just about 5 years behind japan...haha...

I work for fido currently, any questions you have, feel free to ask... currently the best plan we offer is 30$ a month, unlimited incoming local calls, which means that anyone can call you and it doesnt take away from your minutes... with this plan, including voice mail and caller ID you can expect to pay about 50$ a month on your bill, depending on whether or not you do any long distance or go over your minutes... with a 2 year contract we have some free phones or 1/4 prices phones, otherwise you'd have to buy the phone at market price... if you cancel your contract pre-maturely, there's a cancellation fee of 200$ if there's more than 1 year left in your contract, otherwise for less than a year, they calculate it based on the number of months left, up to the maximum of 200$ (ie 6 months left, 6x20$=120$ cancellation fee)... anyways, if you have any specific questions please feel free to msg me or post it, that goes for anyone who's interested, and just so Im clear, I dont get comission, so im not motivated by earning extra cash by this, I just happen to be working for them for the time being; I consider myself to be a savyy consumer and I always look for the best deals, so I work for the customers actual needs...

ya thats a montreal thing for sure, its in other cities as well, but its definately montreal... some places in europe its the opposite, that screwed me up, people were huffin an puffin at me for being on the wrong side, and I was like "um, ur on the wrong side..." according to my sociology course, most people pick sides of the side walk about 30 paces from each other if walking in on coming directions, that way theres no body collisions, though my favorite is getting confused by someones on coming body language, picking the same sides over and over until you almost collide, then come face to face and each appologize, pick sides and move on, hehe, so canadian... think about that the next time you walk on the side walk heading towards someone...

Main subdivisions of the human encephalon. The frontal areas include the frontal lobe (its anterior tip is called prefrontal area) and the motor cortex (responsible for the voluntary control of muscle movement) and sensory cortex (which receives the sensory information coming mainly from touch, vibration, pain, proprioception and temperature sensors; there are separate areas for olfaction, taste, vision and audition). Broca's area is a specialized area responsible for the motor expression of speech.

Since sociopathic individuals have marked alterations in their relation to other human beings, it is only natural that we should first seek whether the part of their brains responsible for this has some significant abnormality.

Much of the behavior which makes possible stable and adequate social relations is controlled by the part of the brain called frontal lobe, which is located in the most anterior part of the brain hemispheres. All social primates have highly developed frontal brains, and human beings have the largest one of all. Self-control, planning, judgment, the balance of individual versus social needs, and many other essential functions underlying effective social intercourse are mediated by the frontal structures of the brain (see Dr. Silvia Cardoso's enlightening article on "The External Architecture of the Brain" in Brain & Mind Magazine's first issue, to understand what's the frontal brain).

For a long time now, neuroscientists known that lesions to this part of the brain lead to severe deficits in all these behaviors. The inordinate use of prefrontal lobotomy as a therapeutic tool by surgeons for many mental diseases in the 40s and 50s, provided researchers with enough data to implicate the frontal brain in the genesis of dissocial and antisocial personalities (see my article on the history of psychosurgery in the second issue of Brain & Mind Magazine).

Illustration of trans-orbital leucotomy, a surgical operation which was widely used in the 50s to perform prefrontal lobotomies in many types of mental disease. Developed by American neurosurgeon Walter Freeman, it consisted in inserting a blade through the roof bone of one of the eye orbits using a hammer and local anesthesia. The movement of the blade severed important connections between the frontal areas and the rest of the brain.

Research with animals has shown that the right orbitofrontal cortex is involved in fear conditioning. For instance, when a rat is punished with an electrical shock every time a light blinks in its cage, it develops a fear association between the stimulus and the punishment. Normal humans learn very early in life to avoid antisocial behavior because they are punished for it and because they have the brain circuits to associate fear of punishment (feeling emotion) to behavior suppression. This seems to be a key element in the development of personality. When there is no punishment, or when the person is unable to be conditioned by fear, due to a lesion in the orbitofrontal cortex, for example, or due to lowered neural activity in this area, then it develops an antisocial personality.

We have now a direct way of visualizing brain function, which has lead to a remarkable explosion in our knowledge about the inner workings of the psychopath's brain in the last two to three years:

PET images of the brain of a normal person (left), a murderer with deprived background (middle) and a murderer with non-deprived background (right). Areas in red and yellow show a higher metabolic activity, and in black and blue of lower metabolic activity. The brain of a sociopath (right) has a very low activity in many areas, but which is strikingly absent in the frontal area (upper part of the images). Images by Adrian Raine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA.

Indirect evidence of the role of prefrontal cortex in psychopathic behavior is coming from other experiments as well. In Canada, a team headed by Dominique LaPierre compared 30 psychopaths to 30 non-psychopathic criminals, using tests that evaluate the function of two parts of the prefrontal cortex: the orbitofrontal and the frontal ventromedial areas. The results showed that "the psychopaths were significantly impaired on all the orbitofrontal- ventromedial tasks", but not in the function of other areas of the frontal cortex. The similarities between psychopaths and patients with prefrontal cortex damage surfaced in several areas of the study. "Both the psychopath and the orbitofrontal or ventromedial frontal patient show an exaggerated preoccupation with sexual matters, acting in a promiscuous and impersonal maladaptive way," observed the researchers. "Both are remarkable for their lack of social and ethical judgment. Both neglect long-term consequences of their actions, choosing immediate gratification over careful planning."

Directions from Downtown Montreal to the Douglas Hospital by car

Go south down Peel Street to St. Antoine Street and turn right. Stay on St. Antoine street until the exit for the 720 west. Tthe entrance will be on your right side just after you pass the Molson Center.

Once on the 720 West (the Ville Marie) get in the left lane and follow the signs to the 15 South (direction: Champlain Bridge) exit 1-S.

Once on the 15 South get in the right lane an take the exit for: Boulevard de La Verendrye

Stay on Boul. de La Verendrye until Woodland Ave. (Shell gas station on the corner) and then turn left taking you over the Aqueduct.

Stay on Woodland Ave until Bannantyne Ave. Take a right at Bannantyne Ave. and follow it until the end. It will join Lasalle Boul. and at this junction you will see the Douglas Hospital on your right.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions from Downtown Montreal to the Douglas Hospital by bike

Far and away the best way to ride to the Douglas the first time is to follow someone who knows the way. However if you're on your own, this is the way.

Get to the Lachine Canal bikepath, from downtown the best way to do this is to go to Old Montreal and get on a path heading west. You'll find it. If you're starting from further west, you can get onto the path at the Atwater Market, just head south through the east side of the market.

Follow the canal until you reach a street called Angers, it is easy to miss because it doesn't cross the path; it ends at the street beside the path. If the path crosses to the north side of the canal you've gone too far. Once on Angers follow the bike signs: the street winds around briefly, you will cross some train tracks and then immediately turn left onto a path. The path winds around under the highway for a bit and then you come up between the Aqueduct and Boul. De La Verendrye. Follow the path south across the bridge over the Aqueduct and then west alongside the Aqueduct. You can follow the path until you see the Hospital on your left and then turn in or you can turn off the path at Beurling Ave. and follow it straight to the hospital.

Oh, by the way, the wind is always from the west, but it dies down by about 8:30 (just in time for the ride home), enjoy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions to the Douglas Hospital by public transport

Take the metro (green line) to de L'Église
From de L`Église take bus #58, which will take you along Wellington and Boulevard Lasalle.
Get off at the Douglas Hospital.

Alternatively,

Take the metro (green line) to Monk.
Follow Monk (on foot) to Boul. De la Verendrye and cross the Aqueduct at Stephens.
Follow Stephens to the Douglas Hospital.
From the Metro, this is about a ten minute walk.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parking

As of Monday June 17th 2002, all visitors to the Douglas have to pay for parking. Cost is $1/half-hour OR $3 per day OR $30 per month. Tickets can be obtained from the machines available. All proceeds go to the Douglas Hospital Auxiliary for patient care.

This is a Douglas policy not an AUM policy. Please respect the parking signs, or else you risk being towed at your own expense.

Alternatively, you can park on Lasalle Blvd, car pool, take the métro, or bike to the Douglas.
