hmm.... lets see, we have the palestinians and the syrians and the lebanese who all don't like Israel, the you've got their guerilla side who wants Israelis dead, namely the hamas folks and the hezbollah, both backed by Iran and Syria and a bit of lebanon; the states is looking for an excuse to bomb Iran, and Israel is using the hollacost as an excuse to kill the anyone who stands in their way(ie kidnaps their soldiers or self detonatese themselfs on a bus), the states supply weapons to Israel, but also tried to get Lebanon to be independant for the past ten years, without having admitted that even thought the media leaked it... this kitchen will only get hotter, lets all be thankful that none of us live there, cause shit is definately guna get more fucked up over there real soonish...

I was curious if anyone else ever shared this feeling, I've thought about it a lot and figure that Im probably not the only one, and that it could easily be pegged as another side effect of modern day society, but does anyone else ever feel alienated by organic music? I mean, I listen to probably 90% if not more electronic music on a daily basis. My roots are very much in organic forms of music, having played several instruments and having grown up listenning to rock etc... But these days, sometimes I seriously feel detached when I listen to any type of organic music, aside from breaking it into peices in my head while Im listenning to it, and remixing it up there aswell, I just feel like I can't relate so much anymore, sometimes at all. I go to bars and listen to all the classic rock and punk and alternative, and I just feel like it doesnt make much sense anymore, like its some form of alien music. But then I listen to any type of electronic music and it makes perfect sense and I really feel it, so much so that I can almost picture microchips heating with electric current and cooling fans buzzing away and all types of cables patched in here and there...

My question is simply if anyone else ever feels this way, of if this is some form of musical issolation that I've contrived in my own life, something I live alone... am I becoming more machine than human?

For those interested in finding out more about the illusive Gnarles Barkley, the BBC has put up a short 30min audio documentary on his roots, origins and manifesto... check it : [ www.bbc.co.uk ]

And the combo is Ceelo-Green a fromer Outkaster and funkmaster, the actual voice of Gnarles Barkley and the producer of the number one smash hit "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me"; and Dj Dangermouse a former Gorillaz collaborator and producer and solo artist remixer and creator of the GERY ALBUM!!!!!!

Im a loyal Sony user when it comes to phones, MDR-V600's are the obvious quality Dj headphones of choice around the world, I've been beating the shit out of mine for about 5 years and they are still kicking strong. As for production, if you move up a couple of notches, I think the MDR-V900's would be my choice, they are some top quality studio production headphones... However, both models are big and heavy, but I gotta big head and some big ears, so they fit me nice and comfy, but arent right for all...

how about reading your records, no one has mentionned that... I think its pretty darn important to learn how to read records to be a dj, so much so that eventually, you can take one quick glance and know exactly how much time you have left on a track, where the breakdowns are and key spots for mix-ins... advanced readers can even distinguish the speed of the record based on its groove sizes, without needing to check the track info...

Murdock, u defended urself very well and were able to give examples, dope... I can agree that at its core, most electronica is limited by its repetitiveness and yada-yada, but to say that it isnt progressing is to deny the existence of a progressive production force, trust me, I listen as many of the tekno/house/trance/experimental releases as I can on a weekly basis through juno.co.uk, and I have to say that eletronic production just keeps getting sicker and sicker, everytime I get bored with a sound, I just investigate it until I uncover something new and crazy or old and way ahead of its time...

To expand on this, I'll give you an example. I used to listen to a lot of rock'n'roll growing up, and denied that it would ever make a comeback after the 90's and so I basically stopped searching for a new rock sound. Then years later I started hearing bits and peices of new stuff and I began to see it as a progression... new skool rock combines a lot of different musical elements and setups to create a new rock type sound, call it indie or wtv, "Its still rock'n'roll to me..." either way, this shows that sounds evolve, it all depends on whether or not you chose to find that evolution and go with it. Now I agree that plagerism is plagerism, but immitation is also the sincerest form of flatery, and then there's the ol' "if it aint broke dont fix it" phrase, so yes, electronica can seem very similar by its bones, but there is definately a progressive evolution going on, u just dont focuss on tekno or trance, so it isnt apparent to you... not to mention that I find knowing a bit about a genre can easily give you the wrong impression; probably as easily as knowing a lot about it. whats important with any genre is keeping an open mind and constantly exposing yourself to new material...

all this without even mentioning the fact that in todays music industry, it is so extremely hard to make a buck, that if your shit doesnt blow studio heads away(and this doesnt count for pop shit, though they've definately stepped up their production lately aswell) u dont have a prayer.. then there's the ever growing synergy of online media and digital formats as reproduction, this is without a doubt setting the bar higher and higher...

In closing, yes I know this resembles a novela at this point, I would like to mention one very important fact to everyone, and this is in my humble opinnion, feel free to call me out on it, in all the years that I've been a dj, my favorite sound to play and the difference between me buying a track and playing it or not, is the kinda sound that makes you feel HIGH, muzik that fucks with your head, gives you rushs and is composed for people on drugs... thats right, I like drug influenced muzik of any genre, trance-tekno-house-breaks-electro-dnb-jungle... the drug sound is here to stay, I find the best of it will make you feel high even when you are sobber, its produced purposely to be played loud and give peeps shivers, tingles and smiles, not to mention make their feet move. I've been listenning to, enjoying and playing this kind of sound for so long, I truely believe in it, but there's a time and a place for everything, and it is by no means anyones cup of tea... muzik is a way of life for some people, and it is to me; I consider muzik to be one of the greatest things I've ever known/been part of during the little time I've been on this planet,

AMEN

M-Dock, ur constant muzikal whining is like a dog with no balls, useless to bitches and without reproductive purpose in the eyes of the universe... u dont like repetitive beats and have no patience for sublties, thats fine, but say it like it is, dont mask your inaptitudes or personal views with trite rederik, save us from your deliberate spewing of unecessary supposed calamities... muzik is an ever changing, always evolving type deal, with no end to the possibilities, other than ones imagination or tools... and btw, please let us know what in ur opinion is good muzik, so we can have-at that shit aswell, nothings more boring than a one sided coin that does nothing but talk about its bad side, without offering another...

oh and @trix: u sound like a complete wanker unless ur comment was a joke, which I didnt think it was, which would automatically make u a wanker... house muziks roots are in disco, incase u didnt know, and to say that all house muzik is shite or "unsophisticated" is like saying all white people are smart and kind... garbage statements my friend, belong in the garbage...

good extersizes would be playing recs really slow and trying to beat match perfectly... then playing ur recs really fast and trying to beat match perfectly(both those technics come from practicing scales with an actual instrument, but they also work well for improving your mixing skillz)... another would be crossing styles into each other... and yet another would be stacking five selected choonz, and mixing them into each other over and over until u do it seemlessly, and each round mix them in faster and faster, forcing urself to complete the mixes in less and less time... repeat all these practices with special attention to how u treat the basses, the mids and the highs, one knob level at a time... another great way to improve is to listen to the "best" mixers out there, over and over, listen to them until u can physically picture exactly what they are doing, then try to mimic their technics on ur own, efx and all...

oh yes, and if u really want to get deep into that shit, practice with a full length mirror and a bucket of chicken, inbetween mixes, stare at urself in the mirror while eating the chicken...

pyrotix... a word to the wise, the STM has severe penalties for "loytering"(which can vary depending on their version of the story) among other things, and those bully/wanabe/failed cops arent very positive people in general... if I were u, I'd read the "regles du system de metro", you can find them posted on the wall at any metro station, go over them with a fine comb and be sure there's nothing that they can do, cause trust me from personal experience, if they find an angle, they'll use it angaist you, and the po-po will show up no matter what station u end up @... there actually might even be a rule against dancing in the metro(im not joking) either way, seriously, do this, cause it could save you and a lot of your kool friends some serious ass, no fun, pain in the brain, headaches...

first off thanks for the advice.

Dave-It is a rough cut, so there's still a bunch of stuff I want to do to it, the process isnt over yet, I agree, its long and loopy.

Breath-I didnt know what "try using a paz analyzer from the waves shell coupled with a hp/lp filter on each channel to ensure all frequencies are nice and seperate, it will make it all much crisper... " meant, so I looked it up. I found a kool link to someones advice on a thread about mastering. Thats something I've never payed attention to, I tried what the advice offered(with some differences, as this isnt a hiphop choon) and it seemed to have cleaned up the sound a bit. In Fruity which is what I used, I think the spectroman plugin accomplishes the same thing as a paz...

Here's teh link to Fruity masterin advice...(oh ya, and its apparently stolen from an ebook)

how about hooking up 6-8 reel to reel projectors with old NFB foorage and scratched sound tracks for bleeps through a mixer as the source sound for scramble, keep 2 seperate channels open on the mixer for final scratch running on a second laptop, over lay the images ona canvas, loop the audio through an external effects patchbay and have the digital images being sourced realtime from the backend of a massive vid archive on a server... add a strobe and smoke machine for added effects...

oh ya, and this prog could possibly put both dj's and vj's out of work, if the interface ever gets windowish, especially if its eventually compatible with that stupid ipod mixer console...
