jungle came first... DnB is the angry and loud child of jungle... after years of doing too much xtc, the dark side crept in and created a drum and bass monster... I like the way that dnb was explained in Modulations... which btw gamos, you should watch if you want to learn about electronic music... or just keep asking fred questions :)

I dunno... as far Im concerned, from a producers point of view, I think free distro can work for added exposure, as long as the cost of the free exposure actually ends up helping generate revenues for the artist in question... though in my experience, thus far, it has yet to pan out... when I say helping generate revenues, I mean if the exposure can help get the artist booked...

as for pirating muzik, my belief is that pop music should be pirated, thereby watering down an overly supplied and forced market of crap. The vast majority of pop-musicians do not get properly paid by their labels, and only really generate revenue (if they are smart) through tours and merch and advertising contracts, so if they exposure is increased because of illegal trafficking of their tunes without revenue it is not the end of the world and may even cause them to make more money... record sales alone generate probably one fifth of what they used to... and because of the size of the pop market, they will always have the true lovers of pop paying for it...

however, that being said, my general rule of thumb is that I pay for what I believe in or what I use in performances, at least 90% of the time. Those are my ethics, they are by no means "right" or "good", they are just how I navigate the ethics of my own passion and feild... I torrent, I trade and I purchase... not to mention that I give back by posting and linking free downloadable, royalty and copyright free compositions of my own...

Lastly, my favorite example of how stealing or trading muzik online can help the artist, would be dangermouse. When the grey album came out, it was one of the top downloads of '05 (I even downloaded a copy) yet the artist never made a dime off of those millions of downloads, ofcourse, neither did the record companies... to make matters worse, EMI even tried persuing dangermouse because of copyright infringement due to the beatles samples... but, eventually, they signed a contract and the grey album was no longer considered "illegal"... not to mention that dangermouse got some serious acclaim for his work and has not been short of work since...

I dunno, Im an eternal optimist Fred, I will always chose to look at the brighter side of things. I also try my darndest not to lump mass amounts of people into categories, I try and give them some credit, even if it isnt a true picture of reality, I would like to think my fellow humans share some common ground with me. I chose to believe that voting does make a difference... further more, I feel I earn the right to complain about the outcome or the device of voting itself, because I vote.

Im not disputing the fact that we do live in a time of mass diversion, but I think buying into the whole "everybody is just a use tool due to media control" ideology is about as easy as denying its possible existance. Personally I think a middle ground is a healthy choice, life can never be so black and white...

Well, we aren't debating salaries for politicians, we are debating whether or not the system actually functions and if voting actually makes a difference. Using sports as a comparisson, which is valid in the sense that both government and organized sports are forms of business, but they are very different forms of business. Fans don't play the same kinda of decision making roles that voters do politics, they don't vote on anything... well maybe online polling on fav. players or teams, or who will win etc...

And as far as conecpt of keeping people sheepishly watching tv, I dont buy into that. Its ok to watch a sports game a couple of times a week, I follow hockey avidly, infact I play ice hockey aswell, and I still have time to teach myself new computer tricks, read several major publications(national post, montreal gazette, new scientist, bbc, cbc, cnn, thank you very mrs.palin)... as well as find time to spin, remix and produce, all while working 40-45hrs a week, not to mention shows etc... anyways, all that to say that I do hell of a lot more than just watch sports, and those this might be surprising, so do most sports fans.

I think the concept of keeping people happy with sporting events dates back to ancient rome, but I highly doubt that constitutes the same numbers today. Infact, Im pretty sure that less people watch sports than you think, not to mention what about all those people that don't like sports?

Ufot-you can only complain about losing when you play

" what makes you think your oppinion is going to matter in deciding the fate of millions of people and billions of dollars? "

Great question Fred, and the answer is simple. Where do you think the government gets those billions of dollars? Im just gunna call it like it is, if people want to totally lose faith in all systems, then so be it. But frankly, you can actually use some logic to deduce that governments needs to keep people happy otherwise the economy and their budgets go down the tubes. Im not going to pretend that they don't lie to us along the way, but their hands are tied on some things, and I would wager that elections are one of them. I am also not saying that fixes do not occur, as I am sure they do, however, the system itself is in place for a reason, and playing pretend decision time is probably not the reason.

No one can honnestly believe that the government and the respective parties would spend hundreds of millions of dollars just to fool the population into thinking they could make a difference with an election. Im sorry, but there thousands of alternatives that could accomplish that feat at less than half the price tag; If government is like a business, name 1 business that would spend tons more than it needs to just to accomplish something useless which guarantees nothing? Let me answer that question, simply put, none, because if a company backed decision making like that, they would not be in business very long.

What this actually sounds like to me is peoples general loathing of the system, which I completely understand. I sympathise with all those who get frustrated or feel powerless, but history proves that voting has worked and can work. Giving up all faith in the system makes life seem even more pointless and in the end actually gives you less power than you have/deserve. I have faith in certain systems, not because they work all the time or because they are always honnest and forthwright, but more because I chose not to give it up.

We as citizens in the 21rst century have already given up enough rights and rarely chose to excercise the ones we still supposedly have, so it is imho very important to play an active role in our countries future, especially considering whats at stake in these strange times...
