i've made the decision to persue the full spectrum of experience and emotion. i want to love, to be heartbroken, to beleive in something, to be shattered, to trust, to reach dizzying highs and brace myself for the lows. i want to be everywhere and nowhere at once. and at the end of this fantastic journey will be a state of enveloping peace.

It's a big venue, so when its booked for smaller parties it creates a weird half-empty dead vibe. But fill that place up (like at Secret Society) and its defintely a decent place.

one big change that has occurred in the past few years in montreal (from what i've been told) is the difficulty in finding and securing suitable venues. because of the negative publicity concerning raves, its become harder and more risky to throw a real underground party.

that said, i think the difference between an underground and a commercial rave has much more to do with the way its promoted (and thus the type of crowd that shows up) then how "underground" the location is.

finally, if you enter the scene because of the drugs, you will leave the scene because of the drugs.

Scientists in America are set to begin a controversial study to see if the dance-floor drug ecstasy could be used as a medicine to help people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

In what will be the first trial of its kind, the researchers will see if the emotional closeness reported by clubbers taking the drug can help victims of rape and sexual abuse talk to therapists. Supporters of the study, which has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), claim it marks an important milestone in the medical rehabilitation of ecstasy, or MDMA, which was given to patients by some alternative therapists in the 1970s and was made illegal only in the 1980s.

"What we'd like to do is develop MDMA into a prescription medicine," said Rick Doblin, the founder and head of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, which is co-ordinating and funding the new trial. "MDMA has a dramatic ability to help people express deeper emotions, to look at emotionally conflicted topics from their past and it promotes a certain catharsis."

The study could begin in January, recruiting 20 victims of crime suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who find it difficult to talk about their experience.

Each will receive 17 sessions of counselling with a therapist; before two sessions they will swallow a placebo or a capsule containing 125 milligrams of MDMA - more than the amount found in a typical ecstasy tablet. The trial will be double-blind, meaning neither the patients nor the investigators will know who has taken the drug. If the one-year trial is a success, further research will follow, Dr Doblin says.

Before considering ecstasy as a prescription drug for post-traumatic stress disorder, the FDA would require convincing evidence of its benefits from two larger studies using hundreds of people. The research is hugely controversial, and getting it off the ground has been difficult.

The FDA first approved the study in November 2001 but insisted that Dr Doblin's group also get the green light from an independent ethics review board. Permission was finally granted in September.

One hurdle remains. The Drug Enforcement Administration has not yet issued the licence needed to handle the 3.5 grams of ecstasy for the trial to the South Carolina psychiatrist who will administer it.

"My guess is that we'll get the approval before the end of the year," Dr Doblin said.

The dangers of ecstasy remain uncertain. This year, scientists at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine were forced to admit that a high-profile discovery that just one dose of MDMA could cause irreversible brain damage and even death was nonsense because they had used the wrong drug in their experiment.

But significant doubts remain over long-term risks: animal studies suggest that it can lower levels of the brain chemical serotonin and some anti-drugs campaigners and politicians have argued that research into the possible medical use of illegal drugs presents a false reassuring message about them.

Dr Doblin accepts that the drug carries risks, but insists they can be controlled.

Ecstasy use declines among students, but binge drinking a problem 21-11-2003 15:01

TORONTO,Canada - As is the case with most illicit drugs, the use of ecstasy is on the wane among students in Ontario, but binge drinking remains a problem, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health reported Tuesday.

"The escalating trend in adolescent drug use that we have been following since the early 1990s has subsided, and there is some evidence of a downward movement," said Dr. Edward Adlaf, the centre's senior scientist and lead researcher on the annual Ontario Student Drug Use Survey. "The 2003 survey is (also) the first to show a decline in the use of ecstasy."

Ecstasy use among students in 2003 was 4.1 per cent, compared with six per cent in 2001, Adlaf said.

Just 15 per cent of students reported using an illicit drug other than cannabis in 2003, compared with 21 per cent in 2001. And while cannabis rates have been steady for several years, they're still high: 28 per cent compared with just 12 per cent 10 years ago.

Indeed, cannabis is more prevalent than tobacco at 19 per cent - a far cry from 1999, when 28 per cent of respondents reported smoking cigarettes daily. Findings for 2003 are the lowest on record since 1977.

"Most students do not use illicit drugs; indeed, about two-thirds have not used an illicit drug in the past year," Adlaf said.

"Further, the majority of drug users who do report using drugs do so infrequently - one or two times during the past year."

Perceptions about the dangers of illicit drugs have been declining, while the availability of those drugs has increased, he noted. "Despite this downward trend, it is important to note that current rates generally exceed those found in the 1990s."

Among the survey's more troubling findings, however, was the 25 per cent of students who admitted to at least one drinking binge in 2003, compared with just 15 per cent 10 years earlier. Binge drinking is the consumption of five or more drinks in a single sitting.

"Clearly, alcohol and binge drinking continues to be a problem," said Peter Coleridge, the centre's vice-president of communications, education and community health.

"We're particularly concerned that youth still do not recognize that binge drinking is a hazardous and serious threat to their health."

Binge drinking is identified as a health indicator for young people in Canada because of its association with accidents and injuries, said Andrea Stevens-Lavigne, the centre's director of communications, education and community health.

"It is also an indicator of future problems with youth in terms of having alcohol problems down the road as adults," Stevens-Lavigne said.

"There are also other risk factors and implications of heavy drinking; it could be social issues, fights, aggression, date rape - there are a number of issues that put youth at risk if in fact they're engaged in heavy drinking."

Researchers also warned that cocaine use appears to be growing in popularity: five per cent of students reported using cocaine, compared with three per cent in 1999 and one per cent in 1993.

Adlaf said it's possible that high-profile incidents of young people dying from ecstasy use in recent years has hurt the drug's popularity, leaving some young people to turn instead to cocaine.

"Now, ecstasy is perceived as being a much more risky adventure, and in the interim, cocaine has risen somewhat, so we have a little bit of perhaps a substitution occurring."

One in five students also reported getting behind the wheel after using marijuana, while one in seven admitted to drinking and driving, the survey found.

Some 6,600 students in grades 7 through 12 from 126 schools across the province participated in the annual survey last spring.

The centre also expects results in the new year from another study that's exploring the barriers that prevent youth from seeking and getting treatment for drug or alcohol abuse problems, Coleridge said.
