I normally don't write poety, but something came over me after my last mushroom trip and I wrote some words down. I don't really know what to make of what I wrote, nor can I even decide whether or not I like it. Nonetheless, here it is..

"Death of the Spirits"

I used to play with spirits
the trees would call my name
interupting mindless chores
for yet another game.

Chasing the burning tiger
my being rose in flight
uplifted by the singing wind
through the chorus of the night.

Alas the mystery departed
and with the passing of the clock
the shifting shapes became
a pile of dead wood and a rock.

For the spirits live no more
and this the greatest treason,
for in our quest for knowledge
we've killed them with our reason.

Recently I've become interested in Taoist philosophy, and I'd like to share some of the ideas I've come across. By no means am I even remotely knowledgeable about Taoism, so don't take anything I say too literally, but instead do your own research if you find this interesting.

The word "Tao" is most often translated as "the way". It describes a way of life that is in harmony with one's true essence, with nature, and with other beings.

The difference between Tao and other religious paths, is that the Tao is never identified, nor given a form. There is no set of rules or conditions that describe a way of life that is Tao. There are no teachers that can tell you how to live your life according to the Tao, for the Tao is undescribable.

Rather, the Tao involves living your life according to the way that is most natural for you. Thus, it cannot be taught, for it is different for everybody. One person's Tao might be involve a way which is entirely different from another person's.

Discovering one's Tao involves tuning out external forces and rediscovering one's true essence. Every day, we are bombarded by external messages telling us how we should live our lives. We are exposed to advertisements that tell us what to buy so we will be more attractive or succesful. We are exposed to religous leaders, parents, employers, friends, teachers, etc all trying to influence us in a certain fashion.

All these forces distract one from the inner self, because they impose external ideas of what one's way should be - whereas the only source of true direction arises from within.

Following the Tao involves tuning out exterior sources of influence, and living according to that which is the most natural way for oneself. By tuning out all exterior noise, one can become acqainted with their inner sense of direction, that will show one their true way.

The judgemental, analytical mind is often in opposition to the Tao, because following the Tao involves embarking on a path whose purpose may not be immediately comprehended by the conscious mind. Thus, there is an element of faith in one's inner self that is necessary.

I'll try to relate a personal example that might serve to better illustrate this:

In a few months, I will be ending my life as I know it, and going to study in Thailand for a year. The year after, I will spend travelling across Asia. So in all, that means I will be gone for at least two years. My conscious mind can't comprehend the purpose of why I am doing this, or what role my wanderings will serve. Yet I feel a force within me that is guiding me along this quest, and I do not doubt the wisdom of this force.

Well, I can't think of much more to add, so I'll provide a link that might be of interest:

Wicked posts yasmine.

School has been one of the more uninspiring, mind-numbing experiences I have gone through. Most of what I have learned in English class, for example, is how to cleverly echo the teacher's opinion in essay form.

I can't really blame the teachers, because they have to try to teach both smart and dumb kids in the same classroom. What usually happens is that the average-intellegence kids do alright, the dumb kids drop out, and the smart kids either become geeks and get high marks just for the hell of it, or become bored and skip and do crazy shit just cuz school doesn't even TRY to inspire them to realize their potential.

I agree that the addiction rating of alcohol (81 compared to 80 for heroin) does seem suprisingly high. However, I think there are few things to consider about alcohol that might justify its high rating:

1. many people start drinking at an early age, continue drinking, then develop alcohol-related problems later on in life. so while there probably aren't too many teens at AA meetings, alot of teens who today are heavy drinkers will eventually become alcoholics.

2. heroin has such a bad name in our society that most of the people who use it already have major issues. alcohol, on the other hand, is tried by most healthy people, who probably won't develop addictions to either alcohol OR heroin (if they were to try it). a historical example would be the thousands of U.S. army soldiers who used heroin when they went to Vietnam, most of whom did not develop problems when they returned to the u.s.

3. i think that to a large extent, we are socialized to the negative effects of alcohol, so we just tend to ignore or take for granted its ill effects. for example, someone at a party who is vomiting and feeling very sick from too much alcohol doesn't really attract much attention, while if someone is vomiting from the use of an illegal drug, people tend to be much more worried. another ill effect of alcohol that people tend to take for granted is its role in promoting violence. many, if not most, acts of unplanned violence, domestic abuse, and other crimes, involve people who are under the influence of alcohol.

Purely curiousity :) I started doing research into drugs about the same time as I started using. I owe it to myself to learn all I can about the substances I consume, both to minimise harm and to make the most out of the substance's potential.

here's my reply i sent to mr. ahmed

Dear Mr. Ahmed,

PRAISE THE LORD!! All this time I have secretely longed to perform God's work, and now that you have offered me six and a half million dollars, I will finally have the chance to do so! I have prepared all my confidential financial information for your use, including credit card numbers, account balances, and so forth, but before I offer this information to you, I thought we should discuss some of the particulars of God's work. You see, God has visited me several times after I ingested high doses of psychedelic mushrooms, and he has informed me of his glorious Will, which is our duty to carry out, by the grace of God. The first term of God's plan is for us to acquire and train six Nigerian elephants to dance on inflatable beach balls while trumpeting to the tune of "God save the Queen". We then must kidnap George W. Bush, force-feed him several hits of acid, and present to him our glorious elephant performance. After that, well....God will reveal the next step in due time. As strange as this sounds, my dear brother of God, Mr. Ahmed, we must not doubt God's word, for the Lord works in mysterious ways. I eagerly await your answer, Mr. Ahmed, as we together praise the Lord for this marvelous day.

Sincerely,

Dan Barazani

i got this in my email today

Dear beloved in Christ,

Greetings in the wonderful name of our Lord Jesus!
May the Lord’s favour and peace be multiplied to you,
see Numbers 6:24-26; 2 Peter 1:2.

It is a priviledge to share this great testimony with
you, to God be thy glory. I am Brother Pualson Ahmed,
Happilly married to my wife with two children.

During a prayer and fasting session in our church i
asked God Almighty to direct me to an honest person
that will use this Fund righteously to reach the
needy, the less priviledge and lost souls. For the
word of God says, "what shall it profict a man if he
gains the whole world, and loss his soul". The bible
also says, "the blessing of God comes supernaturally
and it is through Divine favour".

The amount involved, is $6.5m US dollar (six million,
five hundred US dollars) This fund was aquired when i
was in the world. Then, after given my life to God, i
packaged and sealed the fund in a trunk box and
deposited it with a Security Company here in Nigeria.

Brother, i will like you to immediately send me your
particulars, full names, full address, private
telephone and fax numbers to enable me procure the
necessary documents covering the fund.

As soon as i receive your particulars, I will start up
all the necessary process on how the funds will get to
you. Be informed that as soon as this fund is in your
possession, i shall join you in your country to see
how the fund will be use for the things that will
glorify God.

I will appreciate if you can call me 234 80 35793337
for further discussion.

Yours in Christ,

Bro. Pualson Ahmed

"To rank today's commonly used drugs by their addictiveness, we asked
experts to consider two questions: How easy is it to get hooked on
these substances and how hard is it to stop using them? Although a
person's vulnerability to drug also depends on individual traits --
physiology, psychology, and social and economic pressures -- these
rankings reflect only the addictive potential inherent in the drug.
The numbers below are relative rankings, based on the experts' scores
for each substance:

Nicotine 100
Ice, Glass (Methamphetamine smoked) 99
Crack 98
Crystal Meth (Methamphetamine injected) 93
Valium (Diazepam) 85
Quaalude (Methaqualone) 83
Seconal (Secobarbital) 82
Alcohol 81
Heroin 80
Crank (Amphetamine taken nasally) 78
Cocaine 72
Caffeine 68
PCP (Phencyclidine) 57
Marijuana 21
Ecstasy (MDMA) 20
Psilocybin Mushrooms 18
LSD 18
Mescaline 18

[Research by John Hastings]

[From: _In Health_, Nov/Dec 1990; eye-balling by Harel Barzilai;
relative rankings are definite, numbers given are (+/-)1%]
------------------------------------------------------------------

"`There's some abuse potential with marijuana,' Koob [sic] says. `For
example, it's probably at least as dangerous for someone to drive
while high on marijuana as to drive while drunk. But on my list of
drugs likely to produce dependency -- people who are out of control of
their use and want to quit, but can't -- it's pretty far down the
line.'

"By the same token, LSD may be dangerous if it makes you think you can
fly and your dive out a window, but it's unlikely to produce
addiction. `It is just not a drug that people take in a compulsive
way,' Koob says. Some people scoffed when the Surgeon General four
year ago called nicotine the most addictive drug known. But survey
figures indicate that nine of every ten people who light up a
cigarette will one day have trouble quitting, compared with perhaps
two first-time cocaine users."

Institute of Scripps Clinic (San Diego)")
