Ollie - Ontario

As a producer and DJ since 1988, Ollie has been at the forefront of techno and house in Canada and beyond. Between 1994 and 1998, he issued twelve recordings, building a unique sound for his label Steel City Records.
Ollie's DJ style is rhythmic and musical. He creates an atmosphere using styles ranging from techno to abstract electronic funk. Ollie performs using a mini-live rig, mixing his original music with records constructing a new sonic experience with every performance.
As a live performer, Ollie emphasizes electronic improvisation, raw and free of harmonic and melodic structure with layers of sound and rhythm. Originally recording in 1991 for Stickman Records, Ollie has also recorded for Probe, Definitive, Strictly Rhythm and High Test Records.
2001 will be a very busy year, this summer, forwardMusic releases ‘seedForTomorrow’, a retrospective CD that includes 13 tracks with styles ranging from minimal dub and electro to electronic machine funk and hard techno.
This release coincides with Ollie’s appearance at the 2001 Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Ollie is one of only two Canadian techno musicians/djs to have appeared at this prestigious event, the other being last year’s headliner Richie Hawtin.
Playing on the final day of the festival that drew over a million visitors to Detroit’s waterfront, Ollie’s appearance on the DEMF’s Underground Stage blew the audience away, and was a highlight for the artist as well. "It was an honour to be part of the DEMF," says Ollie. "I am flattered that Carl (DEMF artistic director Carl Craig) chose to recognize my contribution to electronic music by asking me to play. It is often difficult to be at the edge of techno and to get recognized. This to me is a validation of my hard work over the last decade."
In 2001, Ollie launched Forward Music - a new label devoted to capturing the spontaneous feeling and emotions of its artists music, spanning the musical spectrum from electronic machine funk to free-form techno.
2001 will also see the release of Ollie's first album, and 3 limited edition EPs.

Mateo Murphy:

Mateo found his calling at the age of 14, when, looking for an album by a favorite artist, he stumbled onto the 12" section of his local record store. Intrigued by the concept of the remix, he started buying 12"s by his favorite pop artists, gradually moving towards the more underground house sounds coming out of Detroit and Chicago.

Once in college, however, he discovered Montreal's fledgling rave scene, and the harder European sounds that drove it: dropping out of school shortly after, he devoted himself to deejaying full time. After just a few months of intense practice, he got his professional rave debut in 1994, and quickly grew a strong following in Montreal and the surrounding area. Combining the funky rhythms and soul of house music with the hypnotic repetition and intensity of techno, he developed a unique sound that manages to appeal to fans of both. His skill at working a crowd, combined with his impeccable programming and seamlessly mixing, makes his sets irresistible to dance to and has made him one of the most respected DJs in the city. He has held residencies at 5 different clubs in the city (which earned him a top 5 spot in the 'best club dj category' in a recent Montreal Mirror reader's poll), and has made countless guest appearances headlining in bars and raves across the country.

Pushed by the desire to broaden his horizons, he decided that producing his own music was the next step. Fuelled by the local success of his early productions, he decided in 1998 to invest himself fully as a recording artist, cutting down on his hectic deejaying schedule to build up his own studio and produce seriously, developing his sound. The fruits of this labor are quickly coming to light: in a short time, he has released records on all the prominent Montreal-based techno record labels, which has lead to an A & R position at Default recordings, and long-term record deals with several others, including Disktrick and Turbo recordings. His releases consistently find themselves in the charts of some of the biggest DJs in the world, including Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Derrick May, DJ Dan, Josh Wink, and Adam Beyer. And with the increasing demand for his production skills from outside of the city and his growing reputation as both a live act and a DJ, the next year promises to make him one of Montreal's biggest exports.
