again, no requests in raves. just in bars IF i'm getting well paid to please the customers, IF the customers request something decent.

preparing sets is not part of DJing, btw. having an idea of what you want to do is cool, a starting point, pick out the first few tracks to get you in the mood w/out worry...but a whole set planned out?
i'm not a big fan of that, especially if the DJ has been at it for more than a few years.

plus, it's less fun to play that way, imo.

yes, DynV, i meant bars/clubs...raves = no request (but i do take suggestions), for the same seasons you stated.

every once in a while someone will ask for a track and i'll be happy to play it 'cause it's a track i love, or wasn't sure to play 'cause of the crowd but the person gives me the green light, or they'll ask for a track i hadn't thought of playing.

and sometimes they ask for garbage, and i reply: oh, sorry, i don't have that with me.

i think the DJ's job is being over-glorified here... sometimes a request by a drunken twit who asks for house at a metal night or raggaton at an irish pub, is lame.

But a dj that can't fit something a little different into a set in order to please a paying customer is either incompetent, lazy, or too pretentious. you can also play remixes of similar tracks to fit something 'pas rapport' into a set...

it sucks to have to compromise sometimes, but if you're playing in a bar or club, requests are to be expected. if you're getting multiple requests, then you may be reading the crowd wrong...

and Gamos, any dj that can't throw something unexpected into his 'art', is a pretty weak artist.

i don't like requests, but i can take them, with a little good judgment, and make them work. it makes some ppl really happy and grateful.

i'm sick of every single dj thinking they have absolutely the best taste in music, 'cause sometimes they really don't. though the same goes for the ppl making the requests too... .. .

either way, since what i wrote was similar to what you seem to be responding to: i really don't have a problem with ppl using effects, it's just the phaser i'm sick of - and it tends to be lazily used. good DJs, like yourself, use the effects properly anyway, so i'm not worried...

and i'm no purist, just traditional in the way i play, but i'm glad you played records only :)
