Music that's well produced isn't the same as music that's well written.

DM's stuff sounds like it'd be be bangin' on a big club sound-system, but that doesn't make it any less generic than all the other techno that exists.

You can listen to a thousand artists of any given style and still have your favorite - even if it's technically all the same shit - which might be different than your friend's favorite band of the same style ... why? who knows, there are dozens of elements that go into deciding preferences, and you have a right to enjoy one artist more than another - perhaps it's the notes they use, the time/place you were in when you frst heard it, the lyrics, the fact that others like it and you're gullible, or you simply like the artist's chosen sounds for whatever reason, etc.

If you like this kind of stuff, good for you, personally I find it uninteresting, though very well produced, and alot of the melodies are just too cheesy for me. Sounds like Daft Punk making car commercials, but you shouldn't be affected by my opinion .. it's not like I tell ppl that if they don't like punk rock then they don't know good music ...

That's the beatuy of music, you can love it or hate it, or be neutral about it, and it doesn't matter. It's not like religion where a war can start when opinions clash. (Well, maybe a Flame War :p )

Nonetheless, punching someone for vocalizing their distaste of your music is just as weak as criticizing a DJ to his face while he's playing. Make a friendly suggestion, use some tact. In turn the criticzed party can kindly suggest to the critic that he go fuck himself.

It is actually extremely important that djs are given complete freedom to pick and choose what they play. Thats what djing what originally about, guys who went out and spent a shit load of time finding and selecting tunes for the audience.

Part of the importance of this process is that the dj is the guy that will help you discover music that is not the latest hit playing on the radio. Thats how underground artists eventually get known. Because the djs would push their music, audiences would discover it, and the cycle of music self perpetuates.

Now for the big corporations that control what you hear and listen too, that is too say radio stations that are owned by the corporation that also owns the TV networks that also owns the news papers, they would much rather that every dj play the latest Lady Gaga record. Remember they only make money off music they own

...

I have to agree with most of this, and Version's reply to this as well -- what you're both missing however is the simnple fact that it's actually a good thing, for beer sales, to throw down a few tunes from time to time that the audience might not dig, 'cause that gives 'em a reason to take a dancing break and head to the bar for a drink.

Once again though, DJing in Raves is much different -- you play what you feel will keep the vibe and keep ppl on your dancefloor, no matter what/who you're playing...

Every single party I play i see evidence of just how hard that is, while observing the kids play o_O

As for for DeadR4T, well the irony speaks for itself ... maybe he makes music ppl like, doesn't mean he's necessarily a likeable guy, and maybe that's why ppl give hima hard time. Who knows, maybe ppl are just jealous too ... .. .

First, Fifth Element was awesome ;) and I'd've played 1 Hip tune and 1 Johnny cash tune for Mr. Willis. If it was Wesley Willis, then I'd've given hima mic and played whatever-the-fuck he wanted :p

Being a Jukebox Dj is terribly easy, but you still need to work at it, getting all the hit songs and such, making sure you drop the right tracks at the right time, etc.

So you can't dance to Turntablists, so what, you can't dance to ambient either, doesn't make the style any less viable ...

So, punching people for whining about your set is uncalled for, though a big fantasy of many DJs, I'm sure ...

... and getting criticized is probably the hardest part of DJing, so that's probably why alot of ppl work hard to perfect their skills - that and wanting to have some sort of dignity and self-respect.

^ haha xD

dude, seriously, FB has major issues and always has - as far as I can tell since I've been on it - this isn't news! They keep changing the interface slightly (and usually for the worse), more n' more ads, group pages are annoyingly fucked now, the notifications are totally wonky and FUBAR these days, the roles of fan pages vs. ppl pages vs. group pages is all mixed up, it's slow, it's stupid, we're constantly flooded with events (even though I do events too, I feel terrible spamming, and really fb event-invites feel like as if you're leaving a club and there are 3 dozen ppl trying to give you flyers all at the same time), and finally this so-called 'social network' is making ppl socially lazy, imho.

FB would be much more interesting and efficient if it didn't constantly change its features, wasn't a mecca for advertising, and wasn't seen as being so important in the eyes of its users.

It has it's positives, but those are slowly fading out in the shadow of all the negatives ...

Funny though, I've never heard of/seen posted any actual raves there. I remember visiting the area for a venue year and years ago, but it seemed too sketchy. I'm pretty sure that the parties held there are just done by the squatters, or hipsters, or rapsters, or whatever the fuck.

Unless anyone can tell me otherwise - that there was an official party there thrown by an actual promoter - I'd have to say that the so-called 'eye witness' and the media are too quick to point the finger at the rave scene ...

Well, you can talk about it in real life too, without actually doing it.

The discussion isn't about words vs. action, it's about taking responsibility for what you say online.

If you told ppl on the 'net that you raped dead babies on a daily basis, then get arrested/confronted for it and you're all like ''dude, I was just taking a piss on the 'net, I'd never really do that'' then you'd just be a liar, no? (in this case though, one would hope that you'd be lying xD )

Making raunchy jokes on the 'net isn't the same as suffering from some sort of Digital Schizophrenia.

As far as pants goes (about to your ankles) even though wearing the waist-band bellow your ass is a little whack, I prefer baggy 1000 times more than fuckin' tapered pants. Low hip-line is better than high ankle-line ... flood, anyone?

Speaking of hip-line, girls aren't spared here, 'cause if you wear your pants way above your hip-line up near your tits, it ain't attractive (with certain exceptions). It'll turn any nice ass into a flat one ;) . The 80's are over, and we're happy about that xD

Dr.N, allow my to clarify (unnecessarily, imo, since you made it clear enough, but to no avail for some) :

example 1: You call Human Subject A an asshole on the 'net. You see Human A in a party, he approaches you and says ''Hey, so you think I'm an asshole?'' You respond with ''No no, not at all, that's just what I think when I'm online. Now that you're here in front of me I think you're cool. I'll probably call you a douche on rave-ca tomorrow though, but in the meantime I'll buy you a beer'' . This is BAD two-faced (see hypocritical) behavior.

example 2: You call Human Subject B a retard online. You see Human B in a party, he approaches you and asks ''So, you think I'm a retard?''. You respond with ''Yeah, you're a fucktard too, get the fuck out of my face''. This is ACCEPTABLE consistent behavior.

Get it?

I agree that it is frustrating when you know the person online is much more different than they are in the really real world, but even though it seems prevalent on this site, I know most of you people and you are very much capable of having the same attitude on and off line (good or bad), though I gotta say most of you are much nicer in person ;)

However, there are exceptions, such as when two decent people fight in a thread, then meet in real life and realize they are both decent human beings, and work out their differences. They may not become friends, but they get along better, and the online fighting stops. There's no hypocrisy in being more peaceful in real life in order to fix an online feud since it's easier to actually talk to someone, looking into their eyes, than it is to settle problems online when all the shit is laid out in front on hundreds of people, and there are 'reputations' at stake.

:)

I'm pretty sure giving people what they want costs money. Unless, what they want is ... actually I'm not even gonna go there. Let's just say, there is no money to be made from raves, and it always costs money to throw parties (even Free ones, 'cause sound-systems aren't given away, and gas for the generators is another cost) so argument is invalid.

And if you're talking about DJs who want to get paid, or promoters trying to break even, then wtf. You have no idea how many thousands of dollars I've spent on both music and throwing parties to keep the HC scene alive ... in fact, I don't want to know either xD

In this capitalist society, it's hard to avoid the subject of ca$h (and this is coming from the most anti-capitalistic punk in the rave scene) ... .. .

Ok, for the last time, no one is bashing free parties in general. There just seems to be an over-abundance of them this year, probably just because there are also more promoters this summer, and it seems to maybe piss off some ppl, some ppl WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.

You on the other hand, despite being a welcome addition to the rave scene, really haven't the slightest clue about how DJs, promoters, and rave culture in general, function.

Alot of us here have been DJing / Producing / Promoting for the past 6 to 12 years. That doesn't necessarily make us elitist assholes, but it does mean that we are a little more aware of our own situation that you are. So, seriously, don't talk to me about what steps it takes to become a well paid DJ!

10 fucking years of mixing in the scene and, fuck I dunno, hundreds and hundreds of gigs, most of which I played at for FREE (not so much anymore, thank you xD ). And, I promise you that only a quarter, if not less, of those gigs were Free Parties. So, you tell me that all we have to do is play a few free parties to get known then make the big buck at paying events? Just because there is a cover charge at a party doesn't mean the DJs get paid! Don't be so naïve man ...

Seriously, people have to wake up. Free parties are just as cool and not-so-free parties. Balancing the two, however, is the key.

The NTK, not that I would presume to talk in their place but you asked so: started out small, brought with them a European idea of the Free Part movement, and worked hard for years at building their Sound-System, tightening their crew, amassing resources, and becoming great DJs. They are a completely self-contained now, and that took alot of work. For a very long time, they were also pretty much the ONLY crew doing Free events.

Now ask yourself, do you back up Free Raves because of the 'movement' or because you just don't want to spend any money on supporting your scene?

We need ALL types of parties, from free to cheap to mid-range to expensive. Why? Because we live in a capitalist world and price range of a ticket to a rave dictates a number of factors: Headliners, venue, deco/lights, sound, size, and how much your staff gets paid or how much time they have to volunteer.

And, for fuck's sake, it is entirely up to a DJ whether or not he/she want to play for free or not. And whether he/she accepts it or not, never ever diminishes them a person or as a professional.
