Here's what seems to happen when I attempt that, though :

- I often get up, grin and give my place in the metro to elderly women. But they usually proceed to look at me in a suspicious way, sit down and hold their purse closer to them.

- As the bus arrives, I wave my way invitingly to let an elderly person get in the bus before me. But then about 4 fuckers run in and cut her off.

- Same thing at the grocery store at the cash.

- I borrowed money to friends when I was younger. A few years down the line, that money is nowhere to be seen. But if I start mentioning it, they ask me to stop being such a cheap ass bastard.

- I used to be the one people confided into when I was younger. Everyone would tell me their ailments, distress and such. For once in my life, when I started feeling blue and somewhat depressive, people would avoid me and I'd end up on their voice mail all the time.

- I used to have a car and I kept giving lifts to people when we exited bars, movie theaters and other various public places and this, regardless of time and distance from my place. For the few occasional times my car was at the garage, I'd ask the same people if I could get a lift with them ( for once ) and I'd generally get the runaround.

- I used to stop at red lights. But apparently, it's more of a suggestion than a security issue now.

- Try overpaying. The chances of this being noticed by the person you are paying are magically out the window. Try UNDERpaying and see what happens.

- I used to give money to panhandlers. That's until I started smiling, saying " sorry " and they started telling me to fuck off. Apparently, beggers are the biggest fucking choosers there is.

- I used to give money to various charities. But I stopped when I started noticing the people I gave money to appearing on various local news stations as being wanted by the RCMP and having " apparently fled to Portugal ".

- I used to recycle like mad, had 2 green boxes going, all categorized by cardboard, glass, steel, etc. But I stopped being so helpful when I noticed half the contents of my boxes strewn all over the sidewalk, waiting the next week and actually SEEING the guy doing the same with just about every other box on the street.




SO TELL ME ABOUT CHANGING THE WORLD ONE PERSON AT A TIME STARTING WITH ME.

When I stop having the impression I'm the ONLY FUCKING ONE trying to make an effort to be kind, generous and helpful to others and when OTHERS start doing the same towards me, maybe I won't be so fucking jaded about this process and be more enthusiastic about it.

For this to happen, the world would need to feel genuine respect and concern for each other. Concepts that eludes our economically oriented society.
