I say throw pennies at them when they're walking away. They keep pissing off the kitchen anyways. And where's my tip? I made the food.

Not saying it's country, all those guys are excellent songwriters and you vicariously included Johnny Cash in emo by saying that country is emo with different haircuts. The remainder of that is all similarly introspective, dark, brooding music and emo is not the way to describe it. Philistine.

Yeah I dunno about that... Johnny Cash is hardly emo, that's like calling Tom Waits emo, or Leonard Cohen, or Georges Brassens emo. Are you stupid?

There's a new Mudhoney album out. I think grunge is back. I just hope that the kind of singing Eddie Vedder started that later got popular with Creed and Nickleback and a series of other pop-grunge groups finally goes away, though.

Again, I have another two cents to add.

I think the big distinction that "old schoolers" made is that we started to see how limited your options become when you call something a "rave" versus an "event". Yes, a lot of people find being too general takes away from saying exactly what it is you're doing, but this is how I see it. You start to open up to idea of event promotion or nightlife over the idea of your specific and pigeonholed genre or scene and start to find out how to bridge the things you find are connected and similar and work together well. My generation (as in not only age group but the people who grew up with me during all those "rave" years) drifted towards trying to emphasize festivals, autonomous collectives, community, and the idea of working within those sets. We started putting our emphasis into events where expression took priority, where we left enough openness that if one stage was going to focus on a particular genre, there would be another stage nearby handling other genres. The end result was a sense of openness and choice that became more important than the egos of a particular scene or genre, and as a result we saw a lot of crossover between groups, a lot of "syncretic" forms of music, and a lot of communication between networks that previously stuck very strictly to their pigeonholes. Needless to say it did not work for everyone. Many people like keeping to their scenes, be they electro, drum and bass, jungle as opposed to dnb (there is indeed a distinction and it lies in the style of programming), breakcore, hardcore, "anything goes" events that often cross over to "hipster", indie rawk, you name it... myself and my better friends were more about mixing experimental currents, having a show open with improvised electroacoustics and end in breakcore or hip hop sets, and keeping the emphasis on novelty of expression. This distinction was huge for me. I continue to write, record, and engineer many different styles of music, my mind has opened more and more each year, and it has led to growth. Old schoolers are jaded because everyone is too conservative, trying to hang on to what was, and not trying to think of how the past influences the future (as well as, naturally, the present). We are in a process of unfolding. Let change happen. That was what we were looking for initially. Continue to pursue novelty rabidly and with reckless abandon and you will never miss the good old days. These days are old. Let them be good.

I didn't figure out quite who it was in my head until I latched on to the memory of meeting him numerous times at my tiny events. What an amazing guy. What a tragedy. I hope everyone is dealing with this ok... I'm sure I'll find out he was with friends of mine in Guelph too, considering his incredible energy I can imagine about 100 other friends who must know him as well.

He was incredibly supportive of... well... everybody, and everything, and it didn't take long to latch on to that. I wish I'd gotten to know him better. Now I can't. Let's all try to be like him in our own ways...

Pffffttt... no, no, I was trying to put up "Your Only Friend" by Phuture.

I'll take your car from you, etc...
In the end
I'll be your only friend

Phuture also had a track called "Cocaine" which isn't too different. In short, cocaine was indeed popular but frowned upon in the early acid house scene. I think it had something to do with yuppies and architects.

Kind of like the architecture and art in Beetlejuice. That indicates a coke habit or chronic ketamine use, when your house looks kind of like Saturn.
