I was going to try running a 95 emulator after I retrieve some old mods off of zip drives I haven't been able to access in ages.

But even back in the day I used Sound Forge for the normalization and final eqing and compressing.

Yeah but if I may man, you already seem to have anger and hostility problems, and some sort of persecution complex that you cover up with megalomaniacal statements. Stop being so textbook. You can use angry music for catharsis or get swept up in the roles artists play in their expressions. You've got to realize that expressions are just that, and are not representations necessarily of truth and/or basic philosophy so much as expressions of an idea, a story, or an emotional response to circumstances. Creativity would be stagnant in general if we were all forced to refrain from using profanity, shock, passion, anger, what have you... you can't just say that something is juvenile because of what it represents for you and how you relate to it.

This is why I love agressive and insane music. It's cathartic, which is important in purging negative cycles from one's life, and it's complex and intricate, which to me is a testament to the intellectual's repressed hostility in an illogical world. It's not just take speed, freak out, and get angry for nothing for me, nor is it for a lot of other people.

The big problem used to be 4-MTA or PMA being sold as ecstasy. PMA would make you feel like you were coming up non stop but it would never level out, so people would pop more thinking that it would finally kick in instead of building, and they'd wind up in a coma or worse, dead, from heart complications or more commonly from severe dehydration.

Now I'm not so sure... the testing kits that I used to be spoiled with in Toronto aren't readily available out here and I haven't been doing enough drugs to test anything. It's sort of less fun when you'd rather just not do anything of the sort and get your life on track instead.

Excellent! Now what we need is the forum section so that we can keep any work on this stuff organized... but seriously, we can't work with only mods... that only represents a small, geeky minority of producers. Try to master in Impulse Tracker. Can't be done...

Update » JasonBeastly wrote on Thu Jan 8, 2009 @ 12:36pm
Also, how much of that stuff is local talent? And how much of it is actually any good? You better not have "Trash Collector" in the mods section for Fast- or Pro Tracker. So 1998.
Update » JasonBeastly wrote on Thu Jan 8, 2009 @ 12:38pm
Anyway, I hope that you aren't dismissing the idea Noah, I can't understand what's stopping you, because those extra costs per month are totally affordable by community members. Really, we need to push what's going on here instead of spinning records from elsewhere, which any marketing dude will tell you is nothing more than advertising for other labels/cities. I would put the work in on this sort of site and I hope you know I'm not just blowing hot air.

We'd have to start small I suppose. I would ideally think this would have different sections pertaining to the most popular DAWs and another section with general file formats including .wav, .aiff, .ogg, .mp3, .m4a, .snd and perhaps even .mod, .it, .xm, all that oldskool tracker shit, because I know some of you use that stuff (and well).

The idea at first should be to encourage involvement across a broad spectrum of genres and perhaps push for innovative directions in crossovers (which is inevitably where a lot of the new bold ideas come from imho). We could start with base files and compare end results, have a regular update of .flp or .alv (I'm tired, can't remember if that's the Ableton format or not), .rex files I guess as well, max/msp patches, Reaktor patches, vsts... the tools are there, and I can't understand how anyone can speak of scenes when hardly any of the regulars here are involved in any sort of local label/scene work. Most of the labels are out of town, some that are here are fledgling and well, we don't know who they are...

Which brings me to another point - discussion of new releases in a section on the site, because we are all after all buying records to spin, separated by popular genre, discussion of labels for music, categorized into sub-forums, and all sorts of infrastructure to make the music, which you all know is first and foremost before any misguided sense of "community politics", the focus of the site. Enough with the garbage.

Would that sufficiently add new life and positivity to the so-called "scene" which I can't really establish parameters for and hence have no belief in?

Probably not. But it's worth a try.

I like the ridiculously hard shit, and I don't care how impossible it is to mix. It's like Merzbow with breaks or something. I still rather like violent slam-dance pits a lot more than colourful rave rehashes...

We need a musical collaboration page, with hosting ability for small wav/aif files. Sample trading, remix exchanges, stuff like that, categorized slightly but mostly by thread. The possibility to host audio snippets or whole files if necessary without having to play them through the radio function, etc. This section could host workshops for different genres of music as well as provide a boost to local creativity. That would truly feed the so-called scene(s), not this b.s. chatting about moral values for a non-scene.

I had a few ideas here and there about how this could be organized. Noah, could you do it? Would you? If not, why not?

Also, producers, do you care to invest time and energy into something of that sort or does it benefit nobody? Is this the wrong place for it?

Discuss. Like adults please.

I have too many obscure jokes about the meth-addled Toronto Jungle scene but most of them have to do with mcing. And it's not so much drum and bass that had this problem, which has always sort of been associated with lounge music down there, at least by the junglists. At least, however, there isn't any shit mcing over it.

I saw that murder sequence (the Russian guys) and it traumatized me horribly. The gurgling made me sick, literally. I was shaking when my gf got home, three hours later. I felt truly horrid but I felt the need to see it to test my sense of humanity. I wanted to know what kind of creep does this sort of thing, but the truth was far scarier than I realized.

Gaspar Noé by comparison is a true artist, a person capable of creating traumatic imagery without having to do anything reprehensible. That is, unless you find his honesty unsettling. The scene with the oxygen tank was apparently a bit of guerrilla filmmaking... the people at the spa didn't know it was fake so those are truly mortified reactions you're seeing.
