That's a nice recipe... I prefer no water, opting instead for the same amount of white wine poured over lightly sautéed shallots, salt, pepper, lemon juice optionally, and you have amazing mussels.

Add tomato sauce and a macédoine of carrots, celery, garlic like you said, a few chilies, also very good.

But the important thing is that you have fries to go with that. Delicious!

A scene by my terms usually consists of people creating music that attracts a following, not people going to events. If you are writing a style of music you are part of the scene. If not, you're more of a groupie, and you frequent the "scene". This is not the "scene", nor is the "scene" even something tangible which we can all say we are part of.

The logistics of it are indeed tricky, and it begs the question, which versions do we keep, which do we scrap?

I was thinking temporary hosting... as in older versions can be expired as needed. Nonetheless, the archiving doesn't have to go overboard if you can cut down on coffee/drug use and organize the project. We could also have a limit on collaborators per project and try to determine who does what step. But I worry about people losing the ball so to speak.

Unfortunately, we need to set ground rules for each collaboration, or we have a remix contest where everyone starts with the same sample pack and submits their versions. HMCR did some themed 3.5" releases like this.

This is actually not a new idea, it's freetekno, sort of. I would personally propose that the material is all protected by a CC license and that members promise not to profit off of other people's work. As for copyright, just keep your rips on the downlow. But then again there are © violations all over the interwebz.

Well honestly I will be going with the scenesters I know from Toronto. We have a really good rapport and the main organizer of Pin:ksox just moved out here. You guys would flip if you heard the choons coming out of Hogtown.

I am going to contact the following dudes about this potential shindig:

Laf-o
Razor Edge
Schizoid
Skeeter
Nwodtlem
Other People's Music
and if it's at all possible I'll see if we can convince our friends from Michigan to come along...

I also want to contact locals about this, and if all goes well it'll happen in March or April.

In the meantime! Feb 13 there will be a Toronto vs. Montreal party happening at the Eastern Bloc, and there will be blood!

Well really Neko, I can see you freaking out for nothing and I just don't get it. I'm trying to set up collaboration, not competition.

That said, if Noah doesn't find this important enough yet, who else would be willing to chip something monthly for the file hosting? This could be huge, and it could be mad fun, and we might very well make some waves while uh... making some waves.

I would be very excited to work with .mod or .it files but given that I'm no longer Sound Blasting, this will be hard to do. Try to get IT to recognize external sound cards. You can only work with the MOTU which is waaaaayy out of date. And that RAM limitation fucks you right up the ass, try it sometime and tell me how it goes. Trust me man, I am the master of IT programming.

Holy crap Neko!

Never thought I'd have to apply that to you!

There is no war, as far as I know, between studio musicians and trackers. Just because you can master entirely on a shitbox and you prefer the sound doesn't mean you have a god-granted authority on sound! You are arguing with people who work daily in professional audio, and we trust our ears!

As I have said before, I cut my teeth on trackers, but I don't use them anymore because well, I find plodding through 300 pages of manual every time I want to implement an effect TEDIOUS. Feel free to do it if you want, and become as virtuosic as you want in tracking, then show us your efforts. Some people are geniuses with that shit. V-snares still cranks out the loudest tunes I've ever heard with trackers, but... he does not limit himself strictly to them, and it's clear. I've had this convo with ex-trackers and trackers alike and there is no way that he mastered the samples in advance only. It's just too well mixed.

That being said, if you can pull it off, more power to you. But you can't generalize this. There is no ultimatum on which program is better. It is a matter of personal preference and style of production. Don't mince words with potential allies, it's like shitting where you eat.

Ok no need to snipe him Mikael, I know Neko, he's a purist, and we don't think exactly the same. The key I think here is how much you want to dabble in the program versus the process. You can do it, but if you have more energy expended in the setup than the creative process you get a big fat fizzle.

I wrote shitloads of tracks in IT that I prefer in sheer intensity to newer tracks, but they were minimalist as hell. It was the price to pay, no easy way to incorporate phasers, reducers, or any other effects, and if you want to turn on the HPFs in IT you have to disable MIDI. I would know, I edited, formatted, and printed out the entire freaking manual so that I would have all my codes handy. But after a while you realize your limitations. In Renoise you can string together a seemingly endless string of F00, G00, R00, S00 commands, but in IT you get a little window on the side, you can put in some hex code for values and you have to convert all your numerals (and we usually don't work with too much math when recording on the fly) to 1F, 2A, etc... then you can only assign one effect per track per sample.

I found myself hitting my head against this wall frequently. It's too simplified. To run a phaser effect, filtering, stomped distortion (that is, clean to distort like that), you pretty much have to find another program and create a long loop. Same as before, you need to use third party software to do the initial edits and then you can go apeshit in the tracker. In and of itself, the tracker will give you nothing on this level and you have to rely on another program to create samples, unless you want to exploit the most unique features of such a program, unsigning signed .wav files, and running any file as audio by having the program convert the raw data to sound. Sick effects, but limited.
