i really think i'll be going for this one: [ sigmawave.com. ]

Merci Neko :)

what's this thing with "conversion connectors"? IBM laptop HDDs aren't standard ones?

are you sure the "U" doesn't mean Canadian-English and the "F" doesn't mean Canadian-French ?

for example
[ sigmawave.com. ] ends with "F" and says "Français"
and
[ sigmawave.com. ] ends with "U" and says "English"

I don't want any of the keyboards on the right: [ en.wikipedia.org ]

I want this one: [ en.wikipedia.org ]

Is that it? :)

good :)

also, I'd like to get a US-international keyboard, not a Canadian-French nor a Canadian-Multilingual; is that easy to find? I'd like to avoid having to buy a separate keyboard and change it by myself... all the more if it voids the warranty!

Thanks you all for your answers :)

Some more info:

- I'm not looking for something ultraportable/light/flat (not necessarily)
- I think I'll go for something below 1000 $CAN

I'm in France until around mid-November; prices are much cheaper in Canada, and since I'll be living in Montreal for at least several years, I'll want a Canadian warranty and regular North American plugs (I don't wanna buy a new power supply cord if I can avoid it, and I don't wanna have to use a plug adapter all the time).
But I'd like to get the laptop in France before leaving, if possible... it's not a big deal if I can't, but it'd be much easier for me; I'm hoping to be able to get it delivered in Paris, and I guess (hope?) the postage fee won't exceed the price difference with the French prices...

I'm still not convinced that cheap Toshiba and cheap Acer have a good enough hardware quality... If I could get a decent Thinkpad or a powerful Dell (Latitude/Precision/...) for less than 1000$, it'd be great :)

--> Sigmawave sounds great! They have Thinkpads below 1000$ taxes included!
Taxes are still around 15%, right?

ok, you'll tell me about that in 1 year ;) I've yet to witness an Acer laptop lasting longer than 2 years without any hardware problem.

OK thanks :) that's one more vote for Toshiba, I think I might reconsider this brand.

Also, since I want a lot of RAM, I guess I'll need more than 2GB, and thus I'll need a 64bit processor.

Hey you geeks :)
I know that there are a few people in here who are still in touch with what's happening in the world of hardware/laptops (which hasn't been my case for several years!)

Now comes the time when I need to buy a laptop, and I want to make the right choice :)
Here's what I think :

- I don't want Apple / Mac
- Acer, HP, Packard Bell are crap
- Sony is too expensive
- Thinkpads seem the best but they're too expensive

- Dell seems good but quite expensive
- Toshiba seems cheap, and I've seen quite a bunch which were broken (hardware problems) after 1 or years... but I've heard good things about them; what do you think about Toshiba laptops ?

- what about Samsung ? Fujitsu-Siemens? ...?

More info:

- I'll be using an XP pro + debian/ubuntu dual boot
- I have an external soundcard and I want to use Audacity/CuBase/FruityLoops/... without glitches
- I want videos to run smoothly and Firefox to be able to handle several tabs without needing all of my RAM (don't really want to switch to Opera nor Chrome)

Overall, I want a good screen quality, at least 15", a lot of RAM to handle über-multi-tasking especially with audio/video !
I won't edit videos (just play/stream them), but I'll need it to support some audio editing via an external soundcard.
Fast HDD and fast RAM as much as possible.

Neko? Noah? Anyone? :)

Also, which websites/places have the best deals?

Update » flo wrote on Thu Oct 1, 2009 @ 10:48am
I don't care about weight, design, webcam, gadgets, installed software, fancy connectivity.
No photo editing, no need for cards support.
I don't really care about the DVD, I just want to read them.
I need good/fast USB (maybe firewire sometime later).

Who's got tinnitus, in here? You know, the permanent noise in your ear that only you can hear... (which is no "hallucination") [ en.wikipedia.org ]
If yes, since when?
~~~
Qui a des acouphènes, parmi vous ? Vous savez, le bruit permanent dans les oreilles que personne d'autre n'entend... (non, pas une "hallucination") [ fr.wikipedia.org ]
Si oui, depuis quand ?
I do, since December 2005
