I know this is limiting... the laptop has 128MB of RAM and is a Pentium III with I guess not much more than 500MHz; so XP won't run on it at all.

I found Softcore in the above list, which seems to be doing what I need (I haven't tried with the controller yet, though). A Max/MSP standalone patch should also work.
I'll probably try older versions of Reason or FruityLoops if Softcore and MAx/MSP don't work.

Well, as I said I do NOT need velocity... just on/off triggering by a simple drumstick hit.
It's for playing intros or movie samples, not drum sounds.
Alesis ControlPad would be ideal but it's too expensive for my needs...

If I get a Yamaha DD-5 working, what I'll still be needing is a "virtual sampler", that is, any program able to assign a "sample number X = on" or "sample number X = off" action any time I hit the pad number X on the controller (DD-5 or rockband drumset or anything else).

I just tried Mellosoftron III but it's so old that it struggles loading the WAV samples and doesn't even play mp3. I'm gonna try and find N.I.Battery, or anything else you'll advise me :)

the Korg nanoPad looks nice but I'd prefer pads for drumsticks instead of fingers, that is, larger and more sensitive.
I think I'll go for an Xbox360 or PS3 rock band drum set, and I'll try to find drivers for Windows2000.
Or it looks like I may get a Yamaha DD-5 so I'll just buy a MIDI-to-USB adapter/sound card!

Hey, I want to launch samples/sounds on my computer by using USB controller. The best idea I've found is to use drum pads, such as rock band drum set's, since I need to hit the sensor with a drumstick. If this doesn't work I'm thinking of using a cheap keyboard (as in "piano keyboard", not "computer keyboard") directly plugged into my computer's USB port; this solution would be less practical for me, but it's still a plan B and my question is the same:

What software should I use to play a given sample when I hit a given pad or key?

I know that Ableton Live can do this, but it's too big/heavy for what I need (my laptop is very old and running Windows2000; I'm not sure it could endure WindowsXP). I'm thinking of maybe using Max/MSP, but I guess there may be free and lightweight software doing what I want.
I roughly know of Fruity Loops, Reason, SoundForge, CuBase...? These are all rather heavy, I guess, and not free. (and some of them may not even do what I want).

Any ideas?

I only need to trigger like 4 or 5 samples of 30 seconds to 10 minutes each, no need for velocity/sensitivity/response/speed (if there's up to one-second lag, it's okay).

+ other question: what rock band drum set has standard usb connectivity? PS2? PS3? Xbox? Xbox360? GameCube? And will I be able to find easily their drivers for Windows 2k? XP?
