i think it's understandable for the free version... they wouldn't want anybody to watch anything on earth (at least not yet)... and anyway, satellites can have much more accurate pics from anywhere around the world.
but i remember when i discovered google maps (the light web-based version of google earth) about 6 months ago, i spent almost one week exploring the panet and flying through himalayan mountains :)

i'd add that if you really want 2x512 instead of 1x1024 (i guess for safety reasons : if one crashes, you still have the other), then in that case buy exactly the same ram cards ! really.

then, ram speed depends more on your motherboard (check your rambus specs) than your cpu. but as ian said, 1GB pc2100 ram would surely be enough and compliant with your material.
