in 50-60 years there won't be any petrol left... and it's still being heavily used for energy, but also car combustible, plastic ingredient, food&health industries, ...

nuclear fusion is far from being mastered enough.

Seb, i think it's just to make it more clear ; there are still a lot of places where "queer" people are looked quite negatively... but at least, Montreal doesn't seem to have this problem too much :)

hydro may not be 100% clean, but it's one of the cleanest and most renewable energies we have NOWADAYS.

nuclear plants produces TONS of highly toxic wastes ; some of them can be treated to become (almost) clean, and the remainder is buried underwater or under the ground, in leaking barrels. these quantities are huge and we still have NO CLUE AT ALL about how getting rid of them. yes why not send them in a country we don't like, or much better, in space !?

contamination of cities around the plant my be highly unlikely for you, but i'm sorry it's a real fact. people in a 10km radius are given iodized pills to help prevent cancers and throat/tyrrhoid diseases. there's a worldwide UN-information (worse than mis-information) about nuclear energy, because of the lobbying and armed purposes i mentioned earlier.

uh ? a sum of anything independant of the index is just a constant, and then the sum operator has no purpose... or didn't i get what you meant ?

sum series that decrease with i will asymptote towards zero, [...]

not necessarily ; it's very likely that an asymptote can be found, but you can't know before calculating it whether it will be X-parallel, Y-parallel, or a Y=aX+b line.

i agree with the remainder, though :)

nuclear energy is clean and necessary ??!! i see you really don't have enough nuclear plants in here to say such nonsense... nuclear energy is the most dangerous of all, most of the nuclear plants are contaminating its surrounding inhabitants on several kilometers, as well as the underground rivers and the soil. moreover, there are plenty of other energies, which are renewable and clean, that would suffice for the worldwide demand.

nuclear energy is just a matter of lobbying, big money, and a justification for atomic research (for weapons&defense purposes).

well, i checked more thoroughly and there's no such general formula that gives you the convergence value of an infinite sum. you can calculate its limit (which is finite), and even its integrate.

but yes, if your sum isn't too much complicated and if you've got a little time ahead of you, you can calculate the first iterations of your series until two following values are close enough for you (which is a dirty way to bound the absolute difference under x%, like i mentioned earlier).
anyway, good luck for it, and feel free to ask for more in computer science (that's my playing area) or in maths (that's the basis of my playing area even though i'm not as good as i'm supposed to)

the series Sophia's talking about is an infinite sum which "converges towards infinity", that's why it's said to be divergent (and not convergent) ; however if it's not Sigma(n) from n=1 to n=infinity, but eg. Sigma(1/n), the series converges and then the matter is totally different.

as for when to stop, Dino's right ; you have to know why you want to stop : if you want an estimation of the sum, in that case it's infinity (if your series is actually the sum of all natural numbers)
but if your series is another one and you want an approximation with an error bounded within, say, 5%, you have to get an asymptote (ie. a line that ultimately becomes approximately parallel to the curve that you want to estimate, but closer and closer ; [ mathworld.wolfram.com ] ) ; then you browse your asymptote until the absolute difference (eg. euclidean difference) between the curve describing your sum and the asymptote becomes < 0.05, and get the x value where you stopped your search.

but if your series is converging, "when to stop" means you want to get its limit when n tends towards infinity to have the theoretical end-value, and then browse your series' curve until having a reasonable absolute difference with this theoretical end-value (same thing as before with the asymptote). there are plenty of formulae giving you an estimation for n=x or epsilon (the error) < x%, but you have to know exactly what you want and what for, in order to choose the right one... if i find something general enough i'll post it later.

i don't really understand your question...
if you're talking about an infinite series, for example Sigma(n) with n=1..infinity, then it doesn't converge ; it should have an asymptote, but no point of convergence.

you should provide a formula or a more accurate description of your problem
