Same problem as people being different according to the context (location, people around, level of seriousness expected, etc.): such difference of behaviour seems unacceptable to some people, but normal to others who see that human beings adapt to their environment.

If you're at a family funeral or at a friend's crazy birthday party, you probably won't behave in the same way.
This doesn't mean you'll necessarily be a totally nice compassionate guy at the family funeral and a raving smartass jerk, but you see the point: behaviours may vary much, according to the context; and this is still part of someone's personality.

This also applies to somebody who's always quiet, nice and shy in real life and who becomes the worst loud-mouthed asshole ever on the internetz: there may be other real-life situations in which the asshole-demon inside him is yearning to express itself but stays borderline.

I guess this distinction between real life and internet behaviour is just a matter of threshold, i.e. when do you begin to consider that something done in context A (e.g. the internet) is "different" from some[ other ]thing done in context B (e.g. real life).

I think most people you're referring to are rather not self-aware/conscious than (mindfully) hypocrite.
