TOLTECH, the dude with the CD was Mikas, not Mico! of [ rave.ca ] .. fyi

HUGE BIG UPS at all the DJs, i can't say enough about this night, for me, it was possibly the best music i've ever heard in a single club night or rave ever. I've never heard Mateo play a set like that, it was a huge honour for us to have him dig out all the old school ghetto gems and really crunh the fuck out of Saphir, wow, once in a lifetime shits right up in that. Toltech as usual demolished the place, i've never heard it so loud in there, a super tight, crushing set from the burnt mexicano. Gak was really, really impressive, played for an extra 45 minutes, dropping SICK ghetto tek shit, constant bombs that i DONT OWN (you fucking bastard!) look out for Gak, this guy reps it the One the Truth style. Benji too man, good job on the darkness, and fuck, the bass sounded sick during your set! Saphir sound system up in this cocksucker.

Also a BIG THANKS to VJ KAS of eraproject, the best VJ in montreal hands down (except for Mindlab, of course), Kas whipped up some super slick, trippy, dark and tekky visuals for five hours, a big up, big thanks, and wow. i never saw the club looking so sick, sounding so loud, and being so fucking evil.

jeudi MIX thursday EN HAUT @ SAPHIR 3699 Blvd. St-Laurent. $4 at the door. 2-for-1 beers before midnight

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MATEO MURPHY found his calling at the age of 14, when, looking for an album by a favourite artist, he stumbled onto the 12" section of his local record store. Intrigued by the concept of the remix, he started buying 12"s by his favourite pop artists, gradually moving towards the more underground house sounds coming out of Detroit and Chicago.

Once in college, however, he discovered Montreal's fledgling rave scene, and the harder European sounds that drove it: dropping out of school shortly after, he devoted himself to deejaying full time. After just a few months of intense practice, he got his professional rave debut in 1994, and quickly grew a strong following in Montreal and the surrounding area. Combining the funky rhythms and soul of house music with the hypnotic repetition and intensity of techno, he developed a unique sound that manages to appeal to fans of both. His skill at working a crowd, combined with his impeccable programming and seamlessly mixing, makes his sets irresistible to dance to and has made him one of the most respected DJs in the city. He has held residencies at 5 different clubs in the city (which earned him a top 5 spot in the 'best club dj category' in a recent Montreal Mirror reader's poll), and has made countless guest appearances headlining in bars and raves across the country.

Pushed by the desire to broaden his horizons, he decided that producing his own music was the next step. Fuelled by the local success of his early productions, he decided in 1998 to invest himself fully as a recording artist, cutting down on his hectic deejaying schedule to build up his own studio and produce seriously, developing his sound. The fruits of this labour are quickly coming to light: in a short time, he has released records on all the prominent montreal-based techno record labels, which has lead to an A & R position at Default recordings, and long-term record deals with several others, including Disktrick and Turbo recordings. His releases consistently find themselves in the charts of some of the biggest DJs in the world, including Carl Cox, DJ Dan, Josh Wink, and Adam Beyer. And with the increasing demand for his production skills from outside of the city and his growing reputation as both a live act and a DJ, the next year promises to make him one of Montreal's biggest exports.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOLTECH is the name given to the last surviving descendant of the ancient Toltec empire that, in its heyday, spread across most of Mexico, the Yucatan and Guatemala. Much like the leaders of the Toltecs, Carlos is revered by devoted tek-heads as a deity whose youthful demeanor will be eternally preserved. Continuing the militaristic aesthetic style of his heirs, the incomparable Toltech drops merciless hard tek cuts for MTL’s Level 4 and Alien Crew production companies. He thrives under pressure, performing perhaps his best sets when condemned to distorted sound systems and bruised mixing consoles, cementing his stature as an underground soldier. The percussive nature of Latin American rhythms continually pervades Toltech’s productions and DJ sets, as this modern warrior acts as the sole spokesperson for a dying lineage.

AXIONFIGGA and THE HIGH COMMISSION. In a distant past, intelligence community’s codename for the heads of the five contraband crime families was The High Commission. According to recent reports filed by the Minister Of Information (M.O.I.), a mysterious force known as the black hand re-ignited these bootlegging fires by bringing together several key figures: DJ yomama, Mr. T a.k.a. Peter Parker, Egyptian Magician, Double-0 Flow & Axionfigga. A young lad was able to overcome a serious case of shyness to put together the most rad “running-man” party of 1989, his Bar Mitzvah. Although a memorable experience, lessons needed to be learned outside of the dance circle. Having now become a man, Mr T took some years away to reflect and study music. Many cassette mixes later, DJ yomama and Mr. T began to expose others to their selector and promotional skills with Tuesday nights at Montreal’s original Peel Pub and special BackSpinKick events at Café Frappées and Annie’s. Rap, Funk, Rock and other styles were generously mixed.

Gathering a happy crowd of college drinking buddies and raising a few ski-trip funds, times were good. The High Commission was proud but not content. Always keeping things moving, they called in a favour. As a result of a financial debt to one of T.H.C.’s business associates, Egyptian Magician was compensated with two Technics SL1200 turntables. Sending him on a journey to the vinyl frontier: rap, breakbeat and trip hop/ninja tune records were acquired. But ultimately, due to such classic albums as Goldie’s Timeless, Metalheadz Platinum Breakz and AWOL Live, Drum & Bass would become the weapon of choice. A short time later, Egyptian Magician was playing out ambient dnb, jump-up jungle and hiphop at numerous loft parties, McGill OAPs, as well as the Schizo and Horizons club nights. Then came the Next Junktion, a weekly net radio show on [ sweet-ting.com ] with Axionfigga & D-Joos. THC was reaching out for maximum satisfaxion.

Meanwhile, Double-O flow was spreading his love of drum&bass to the West Coast. Starting with his Majesty’s Secret Service residency at the Savage Beagle in Whistler and then at full moon parties around the beautiful and majestic B.C. surroundings. Always rocking it with the help of Toronto taxi driver and friend MC Wildchild, the duo would insist dance floors felt the bass. In search of new and fresh underground opportunities, The High Commission began working with partners in crime Freak Addiction, Kracked Knuckles and Cognitive Vibe to form the in Da Jungle Family. From its modest beginnings at Nantha’s Kitchen, a small plateau bar to massive Gravity Afterhours, iDJ events have been held in the most diverse, warm and extraordinary venues, packing in the friendliest and energetic 514 crowds. By throwing jams for 36 months straight, as well as touring on the iDJ bus to shows in Quebec, Ottawa, Albany and Toronto, THC has earned its license to rock.

On the djing tip, Axionfigga moves the crowd with his own wide-ranging sound of drum & bass, mixing liquid funk, Latin and neurotek while also frequenting the dark and bass heavy side. Conversely, Egyptian Magician has stuck with the lighter side of music, playing classic rap, funky pop cheese and various 80s and club favorites at special events like the opening of the Fonderie Darling/Quartier Ephemere, Luba Lounge, Quartier Latin, Modani’s, Chai Café and other inebriating jams. Celebrating the iDJ 3-year anniversary by adding a Montreal date to the Klute (Commercial Suicide, BBS-UK), No One’s Listening Anymore album Tour, the focus has now shifted from quantity to quality shows. The High Commission continues to light the spark with only one goal in mind: to make business a pleasure, and pleasure its business.

JEUDI 15 SEPT. THURSDAY 2005

Sase One: This long-time DnB and breaks producer and DJ has recently devoted his time and efforts to producing, promoting and performing with his Hardsteppers crew, who released their debut album Revolution in late summer of 2005. Check out recent interviews with Sase for the Montreal Mirror [ www.montrealmirror.com ] or on [ www.mtldnb.com ] for an idea of what he's been up to. The Hardsteppers concept has grown from a crew of DJ's and MC's during the early nineties rave scene in Montreal. Playing alongside international artists including Roni Size, Ed Rush and Optical, Carl Cox, Dieselboy, DJ Rap and Montréal's own Tiga earned them the respect of true underground music fans. The hype surrounding their 1996 mix, "Don't Fake the Break," warranted a ten out of ten rating in URB Magazine, along with a slew of cross-country gigs. They firmly established themselves as force to be reckoned with on the North American Drum and Bass scene, hosting both a three year residency at Montréal's famous Angels nightclub, and a bi-monthly event at Sona, Montréal's first afterhours club. Today the Hardsteppers have developed into a multi-faceted production team, recognized for producing reggae, hip hop, dance hall, breaks, house and drum and bass for various artists. Chief composer and producer Sase One's (Mathieu Girard) love of British underground music and his ability to play multiple instruments has given the band its multi-dimensional flavour. The Hardsteppers first album, "Revolution," is an amalgamation of sounds and textures that carves a place parallel to such acts as the Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy. Their mix of dancehall, breaks and use of instrumentals make their music great for the dance floor, but more importantly, an intelligent musical voyage full of twists and turns. Their use of voice as an instrument...rolling and pulsating… provides an almost pop feel to some tunes, making them familiar and catchy. The first single "Sweet Redemption" is a rockin' dub tune that you can’t help but sing along to. Watch for the Hardsteppers video for "Sweet Redemption" in summer 2005. Lots of touring and studio time awaits the quartet in the near future, who will continue with their ongoing evolution.

Basement Wigger is Dac Chartrand, misappropriating jungle drum & bass since 1996. Somewhere between ridiculous and terrifying, an aesthetic is forged. This week, Basement Wigger releases his new LP, A Celebration of the Concept of the People's Republic of North Korea. Sardonic yet sincere. Dope beats constrained in an elaborate concept album meant to criticize the genre as much as it is pushing it's boundaries. North Korean art, despotism and isolation as a gateway to a new aesthetic in breakbeat music. Interpretations of established trends mutated into horribly misrepresented realities at the whim of the creator with no regard for the audience - who want to 'dance'. Click here to read [ mtldnb.com ] interview with Dac. (11:30 to midnight)

Zark Behida is an alter ego of Montreal drum 'n bass producer Blake Markle (Black Market, Blakkar Noir). Astronauts found a piece of paper floating in space with instructions demanding this album be made. Hear the prophecy fufilled. Dirty breakcore, odd meters, jazz/prog rock influences, basslines and amens a plenty. Who cares about dogma when there's a 60oz bottle of vodka making its way around the room? Experimental jungle drum & bass at it's finest. Go to [ www.trotch.com ] to see the picture story of Zark Behida! (midnight- 1 AM)

RamDac: Chief commander & creator of Flexout (online & off), RamDac's been programmed to immerse fellow bots and humans in the magical world of science fiction beats & rhymes. Get yer space & future hip hop suit on & strap yerself in 'cause like Dr. Octagon, RamDac's got seven rounds of space doo doo pistols... you may not believe livin' on the Earth Planet... his skin is green & silver, warhead lookin' mean & when RamDac's conductin' it, astronauts get played tough like the ukelele! [ www.flexout.net ] (10 to 11:30 PM)

Cyan: DJ, radio host and producer Cyan aka Corina MacDonald has been an active participant in Montreal’s electronic music scene since 1996. She has been involved in community radio for almost 10 years at CKUT 90.3 fm, and currently hosts modular_systems, an electronic music magazine show. She is involved in organizing regular events such as the phoniq beta_lab series, robo/tek, and Women on Wax. Her sound is a layered, deep exploration of techno rhythms, intersected by electro and house influences. She djs regularly at events around Montreal, and has played at events in Toronto and in France. She has played alongside such diverse artists as naw, iznogood, sarcastic, andrew duke, b'ugo and philgood. modular systems is broadcast tuesdays from 3pm to 5pm EST at 90.3 FM or online @ [ ckut.ca ] [ www.traktion.com ] (1 AM-2 AM)

Dialect: Initially influenced by hip hop acts such as KRS One, Native Tongues, Gangstarr, Jeru et al., Dave Murphy began to pursue a hip hop scratch dj status in 97. With the newer generation of "Shit-Hop" emerging from numerous hip hop labels, he became frustrated, fed up, and discontinued purchasing hip hop vinyls altogether. Still producing hip hop instrumentals, and working with local MC's, Dj Dialect was still unsatisfied with the current "scene" until his first visit to the afterhours. An easy convert to the Break Beat sound, Dialect blends the precision skills of turntablism with an ear for the underground electronic music community. Dialect can be heard spinnin' "erectro, real skool breaks, dirty disco, whore-house, fist funk and more.

probably bullshit, but one real human person told me this was really happening. it would be very similar to ronald reagan's situation. i guess it truly is possible. the funniest thing about it is that it could so easily happen. only time will tell.

!!

raves cannot be held in dome, for example, or venues that serve alcohol. when the city gives a venue a license to sell and serve alcohol, they also specify that the space must be clear from 3 AM to 8 AM (or some shit) in the morning. gravity couldn't sell alcohol unless they had a separate venue (such as stereo and sona bar's had) that closed at 3 AM.

the hardest part about throwing a party is finding a venue. if you want to serve alcohol (or allow people to drink it in your venue) it's virtually impossible to do it legally after 3 AM. if you don't serve alcohol then you have to worry about fire marshalls and the city, who's job is to protect the interest of the city, so if your event is large enough to get noticed by any merchants, clubs, established businesses, or if anyone hears noise or sees people on the street and calls the popo to complain, they can and will shut you down -you're not allowed making noise, disturbing people, etc, etc, and they will fine you and then kick everyone out. most likely by this time they will also bust you for various other infractions (legal capacity, inadequate fire exits being the most common, bla bla bla)

as a promoter myself, i think it's safe to say that the reason most promoters choose gravity is because by doing so, they don't have to go through all the hell and stress of finding a "legit" venue, or at least a venue that they are comfortable with. once you rent gravity, all you have to do is worry about DJs, flyers, and finding someone to work the door... sure, you have to shell out a bunch of cash, but much of the real stress of the party (legal matters, unpredicted costs) dissapears.

the sound at gravity used to be great, top notch, built my angel moraes who also did stereo's sound, and could have gained as much respect as stereo's system but... when angel left gravity he was super pissed and fucked the sound all up, and, most importantly, since there's no competent sound people at the club anymore, and since the club has no interest whatsoever in actually being a club, and since they don't put any money into maintaining the club, the sound system, the lights, or anything, the sound has steadily and consistently gone to shit. unfortunately... but ya, it's still loud, although usually some of the speakers are blown, or flicker on and off all night.

other than that i agree with whoever said stop bitching about it. if you don't want to go, don't. what makes a rave a rave? is it the fact that the event is illegal? unsafe? ... or is it the music ... ?? ... or, better yet, is it the fact that it stays open after 3 AM??? i mean, what the fuck is a rave anyways?? that's the question, really.
