DJ sets by the Electromotion DJs PETER PANIK de Paris, JESSE MORRIS the dance florist and SLIM JIM the technician

ok it wasnt quite a rave but there were people with glowsticks and uhh we snuck some brewskis in. my friend was so emotionally awestruck that he broke into tears during Dont Stop Believing. they played all their five classic tracks (wheel in the sky, dont stop, any way you want it, separate ways, and when the lights go down in the city) and a bunch of boring stuff. no opening band, journey played for 2 hours and then that was it. as an encore they played some song i dont' know. also opened with a song that i don't know.

the guy that replaced lead singer steve perry is the frontman for a big journey cover band or something, and his name is steve o-perry apparently. he killed it. then i got on some random bus outside the molson center and some dude asked me how the show was and i was all like 'it was wicked", but when my friends tried to get on the bus also he got all freaked out and told me to get off, wouldn't let me back on, really weird stuff. then this ASSHOLE wouldn't let me into his limo.

if you compare montreal to other north american cities, which madforbrad probably hasn't done methodically, you'll see that montreal has

a) way more international DJs of high profile performing on a regular basis.. mostly thanks in part to our 3 fully functioning after hours clubs, but also thanks to regular events like MUTEK, i Love Neon, MEG, Popmontreal, Jazzfest even, etc, etc, that attract international audiences and performers.

b) far more local producers, DJs and promoters throwing far more events; for a city a fraction of the size of NYC for example, or LA, we have a similar scene where anyone can go see local DJs at smallish cheapish bars and clubs almost any night of the week for a very low cost (granted our "locals" are not as well known as NYC or LA locals... ) for example: Blizzarts, Blue Dog, Saphir, Vinyl, Parking, Salon Daome, Bily Kun, Laika... In the same vein there's always loft / underground parties happening, virtually every fri. or sat., where you can hear locals for a low cost; they may not be easy to find and they may not be "raves", but they are nevertheless a chance to hear some of the many DJs, producers and artists here, generally at a low cost and in a non-consumerist setting.

c) our party scene is older than that of say Quebec City, Edmonton or Calgary, we've been through the after hours (and resulting "commercialization" and gangsterism that accompanies it), we've been through the huge parties (swirl's on no.10, arrival, cream, all that shit), and frankly, it's just not cool to be a candy kid raver here like it was ten years ago. I think this is the main reason that some people might find raves lacking in "spirit" in Montreal, cause they are. If you go to Berlin, LA or NYC it'll be the same: you don't find massive illegal warehouse parties happening anymore with full-on glowsticks souces and kids tripping out on E, the scene has got older, jaded and it has progressed and "matured" or whatever.

d) we're all gonna die.

e) also i heard this interesting shit on the radio the other night but can't remember it exactly, nor can i find it online anywhere, but some recent study or some shit showed that the Plateau district of Montreal had the highest concentration of artists (who knows what they mean by that) among all North American regions... they were comparing it to San Fran's Haight Ashbury district in the sixties, so what the fuck, that's goddamned ill, and if you really think our electronic music scene in general is weak, then you're either
a) suffering from grass-is-greener syndrome, if you actually got out of MTL you'd know how lucky you are or b) you just wanna go back to raves in the prairies where all fifty people that attend dance like crazy all night and all day to or most likely c) you're a fucking moron.

Come on all you pretty women, with your hair a hanging down,
Open up your windows cuz the candyman’s in town.
Come on boys and gamble, roll those laughing bones,
Seven come eleven, boys I’ll take your money home.

Look out, look out the candyman,
Here he comes and he’s gone again.
Pretty lady ain’t got no friend till,
The candyman comes around again, around again.

I come from memphis where I learned to talk the jive,
When I get back to memphis be one less man alive.
Good morning mr. benson, I see you’re doing well,
If I had me a shotgun I’d blow you straight to hell.

Look out, look out the candyman,
Here he comes and he’s gone again.
Pretty lady ain’t got no friend till,
The candyman comes around again, around again.

Come on boys and wager if you have got the mind,
If you’ve got a dollar boys, lay it on the line,
Hand me my old guitar, pass the whiskey round,
Won’t you tell everybody you meet that the candyman’s in town.

Look out, look out the candyman,
Here he comes and he’s gone again.
Pretty lady ain’t got no friend till,
The candyman comes around again, around again.

Ellen Reid's response:

We often underestimate the power of our minds (or something deeper?) to alter our psychological states, but this is none so true than when we take drugs. If you're feeling crappy for a while beforehand, you may well have a crappy time. But if you can lift yourself out of it then you are bound to have a better time and understand more about yourself in the process. Datura sounds interesting but way too powerful for my tastes... stories I've heard remind me of Batman Begins when that mad psychologist guy infects the water supply with some drug that wreaks horror.

Mark Karpman's response:

That was one crazy Halloween party! Thank god I didn't go. What I don't understand is how people have managed to turn around such an amazing day into a crazy rampage. I mean, the party that they speak about in this article is totally insane! Broken glass, getting drunk, what's going on here! What ever happened to staying at home and waiting for the doorbell to give candy to those little angels all dressed up and looking so cute? That's what makes Halloween great. Not all these parties that people go to, to get wasted.

Vanessa Hasid's response (from [ Hour.ca ]

And why did I not hear about this Cankered Meat Pile party?! I would have loved to attend, dressed in my infamous Darth Vader garb, being locked in a room with a bunch of strangers in costume and having it videotaped. Then again, I'm just really kind of kinky.
But in all seriousness, I'm curious to know if this was expected. Before going in, was everyone aware that they were to be filmed? Aware that they would be locked in a room with only a window as a means of escaping? Is this for real or is Mr. Lalla playing a good 'ol Halloween trick on us? For some reason, all this talk about dismemberment and flesh eating, sounds a little exaggerated and unreal if you ask me.
Still, if there really is any possibility that this is being edited as we speak, and that it might actually be released for us all to see in the future, it's still good promo, isn't it? In a day and age where someone can become an international celebrity just by appearing on a dumbass show like The Bachelor, why not try my hand at becoming a local celeb by appearing in a very low-budget Montreal Halloween Party movie? I want my face to be seen and known. I would have loved to have my 15 minutes of fame! If talentless losers can have their faces plastered all over my tv screen, I can definitely use an opportunity like this one to get my name out there. And I actually have talent. But I digress.
It sounds like it was an incredibly stuffy, creepy, fun time and I would have liked to have been there. Perhaps laughing at a few people getting stuck trying to escape through the small window, or bashing a few people on the head with my lightsaber... I hope they attempt something like this next year so I can wreak some havoc.

My Halloween was great. I went to a party called Cankered Meat Pile dressed as Jerry Garcia. Blind to the obvious spiking of the communal punch, we all drank crushed datura seeds, then the hosts left and locked us in, leaving only a battery of video cameras to monitor our progress. Crippling hallucinations, dismemberment and flesh eating ensued. Many attendees injured themselves on shards of crushed glass or on the pavement two stories below, attempting to escape from the only opening, a small window over the kitchen sink (defenestration).

JORDAN DARE: (turbo records, [ www.jordandare.com ]
It's late at night, dark & probably raining outside, cigarettes burn in the ashtray, the night sky is full of dark clouds, there is no sun, no stars, just black. In this kind of sea of darkness nothing grows, except music, tracks such as No Love Today, Pressure, Going Under, No Future & Crack Track are rinsed in clubs & charted by everyone from Tiga, Plastque de Reve and more . Dare is a music making machine, in addition to his solo work he is also in 2 electronic bands & is the front man of a local up & coming hard rock group. When he's not producing, he's in the mix 3 or 4 nights a week, that's it, no day job, just tunes, he breathes, eats, sleeps music & it shows, here's the story...
In the early nineties, Jordan made a name for himself DJ ing in some of Montreal's seediest night spots like Sona, Blizzarts, Playgroud, Stereo, Jai, Spectrum, Metropolis, S.A.T & Usine C, smoky dark room after smoky dark room, Dare delivers every time, solid tracks & tight mixes, when you see him play it becomes so obvious that he is most comfortable when performing, producing or singing.Having been influenced musically by early electro, new wave , post-punk & drum n bass (by the likes of Joy Division, New order, Kraftwerk, Jonny L, Black Strobe, Depeche Mode , Lenny Dee & Acen) Dare has been DJing for over 15 years & making tracks for over 7, just coming into his own personal sound and style, now, we call in " ominus post-punk new wave electrohouse."

Jordan keeps sane by making a track a day in his studio & has built a very impressive catalog of music of his own & for his bands, Evening & the new Cut Throat Republic, he has performed across Canada & all over the world including Miami, New York, & even Japan, (not a good flight to take after a St Patrick's day drinking binge, I still cant believe that he made that flight, he couldn't even remember his own address.)

Dare is a resident at Voyeur Saturdays at Blizzarts, (Montreal’s longest running ominus post-punk new wave electrohouse night) & of course famed I Love Neon events along side Tiga. He has also played along side Dj Hell, Martini Bros, Goldie, Sneaker Pimps, The Prodigy, Chemical Bros, Felix da housecat, Grooverider & Fabio, Steve Bug, Afrika Bambataa, Ed Rush & Optical, Front 242, Chromeo, and many many more...

Check out Jordan's latest EP entitled, day in day out, on White Leather.

BLISS [ www.djbliss.net ]
Dj Bliss is one of Montreal's hardest working djs and has been playing the city's club scene every week for nearly a decade. He regularily explores a number of musical styles ranging from Breaks to Electro and Alternative. Recognized as one of the city's most diverse djs, Bliss is a purist's nightmare. He has also been involved in a number of very successful clubnights notably The Grill (Breaks) and Voyeur (Electro). He has played in the U.S., France, Uk, Africa and around Canada. Over the past few years he has played alongside such luminaries as Dj Krush, Afrika Bambaataa, Thievery Corporation, Kid Koala, Krafty Kuts, Bebel Gilberto, and The Streets to name a few..
Originally from White Rock, British Columbia, Bliss moved to Quebec in 1995. His first residency in Montreal was at one of the city's oldest nightspots Le Passeport (in 1997) where he was the main resident for 3 years playing a mix of Electro, Breaks, Industrial and Alternative sounds to a packed house every Friday and Saturday.

In 1999, Bliss co-founded The Grill (with Dj T'cha), Montreal's first all breaks night at Blizzarts. It eventually became the most reputable and longest running weekly of its kind (4 years). Often referred to as an institution its reputation stretched well outside Montreal, not only for its global approach to breaks but also for its unique party atmosphere and notable out of town breakbeat superstars. The Grill was voted second Best Club Night by the Montreal Mirror poll in 2001. The Voir voted Bliss among Montreal's top 3 funkiest Djs in its 2002 poll. Two mix cds were recorded in the context of the night: A mix cd Funk Face recorded by T'cha and Bliss (released in 2001), and another Live Mix @ The Grill, recorded by British breaks superstar Dj Scissorkicks (released on the Toronto label 2Wars) which both received excellent reviews.

In 2003, Bliss also became a resident at Chemistry, a very successful electro orientated clubnight alongside Djs Mini and Jordan Dare. Packed and sweaty every Saturday it quickly became Montreal's "point de reference" for all things electro. A mix cd La Mish Mash (see reviews) for the night was released in September 2003 to critical acclaim and is currently sold out.

In 2004, Bliss revamped the Thursday Grill weekly into the now defunct ApeSh!t weekly, another innovative nightout offering a unique mix of Breaks, House and Electro.

Currently Bliss is resident at Voyeur (formally known as Chemistry) alongside local legend Jordan Dare, where he been playing "a mish mash of electro, breakbeat, acid and rock n' roll sounds." for the past two years now. A recent survey of local clubnights by the weekly Montreal newspaper and cultural reference, ICI, nominated Voyeur as Montreal's top Saturday night destination.

SEBASTIAN PRELAR (djax records, bass heavy music)
Montreal's pre-eminent international ghetto tek export. Born here, former member of The 909 Soldiers with DJ Kal who runs the Montreal based techno label In-Filtration Records, Sebastian has been fascinated by electronic music since the early 90's. He really got involved in composing and creating in 1997. Being active on the Montreal techno scene for years, he acquired experience by giving quite a few live shows downtown and around the city. He then got signed and released his first tracks on Disktrick and In-Filtration Records in 1999. Prelar's style is mostly groovy bangin' & jackin' techno, armed with pounding heavy beats and raw vocals. In 2003 he joined the Djax-Up-Beats team and released his first EP, remixed DJ Rush and then got signed on the german techno label Highball Music. He also got signed lately on DJ Bam Bam's Chicago based label, Bass Heavy Music.

SARCASTIC (level 4 productions)
This amorphous being has contributed to the subculture’s cabalistic causes on many levels for the past decade, performing at virtually all of Montreal's clubs and coast-to-coast across the country alongside techno luminaries including Frankie Bones, Thomas Krome, Slobodan or The Punisher, hardcore acts such as Dr. Macabre or Delta 9 and minimal experimentalists such as Andrew Duke, Kero, Algorithm, or Deadbeat. Possessed since childhood with a needling drive to splice together discrete musical compositions, first with cassette decks, microphones, CD players or 8-tracks, it was only a matter of time before an unwitting companion introduced Sarcastic to his destiny in the early nineties: the Technics-1200. Since, Sarcastic has founded Level 4 Productions, a record label, artist collective and promotion company synonymous with the cutting-edge of techno. His love for the chugging repetitive nature of ghettotek, pure tek, acid house and hardcore genres remains informed by an early appreciation for hip-hop, stoner rock, jazz and psychedelia of all sorts. Equally at home behind two or three decks, Sarcastic’s styles range from the abstract headiness of minimal and experimental tek to his own tongue-in-cheek productions based largely on recognizable samples from such disparate sources as movies, rap or funk.

personally found crytopsy's set dissapointing, no theatrics by lord worm, played fair amount of new material, woulda liked to hear more lord worm era stuff.. he wasn't really killing it imo...

frank mullen pwns all as the ultimate frontman. suffy's sound is the ultimate. how do they do it. it was almost a blessing in disguise that they ended up playing last. they stole the show, it worked out better like that.

and vader closing with reign in blood? that's kinda weak (although it ruled).. kinda weak on their part, but got the crowd going for sure.
