I was a partyer long before I was a DJ and I mix the way I want to hear others mix when I'm dancing. Psytrance has a vibe to it unlike some other styles, the bass and kick and percussions are all saying something to your mind to make you dance, feeling the power of the bass making your insides vibrate is half the experience for me, it just feels good.
I suppose if you did a LOT of work before your set identifying a 3 minute or so 'peak' of each track, you could maximize the number of tracks in your set, but this isn't hip hop or breaks that typically have songs that are only 3-5 minutes to begin with. It's a characteristic of the style that stipulates a better set when you let a good song play out. Most people who go to psy parties know their music as well and I can tell you right now that the worst thing that can happen is hearing your song come in only for the DJ to mix into another song before the best part, it's damn near insulting. It's the equivalent of cutting out a rap song in the middle of a verse. It's like, the word never gets it's rhyme; it would be unfulfilling to mix psytrance that way.

I think your way off on this call but I just woke up and dont feel like destroying you just yet... Ill be back.

I, on the other hand, do agree with his statement and remember myself saying stuff like "fuck, i can't believe he cut out the best part of the track"..

Kallan, why are you so anti-Zed all the time man?? :)

As for Mike, You have been gloating alot latly i have to admit. Just using the term "I" too often can be seen as gloating.. even if your intent isn't to say "i'm the best DJ".. sometimes just saying "I mix my tracks" can sound like "you can't even mix, but i can" !!

words are words, but use caution some times.. or you end up with everyone talking behind your back all the time. Trust me on this one !!

On a side note, I forced Kallan to send me the DnB tracks Host One sent him (some pretty fucken hot tunes in there) and gave it a try.. i think i will pickup some more tracks and get a set ready for some parties.. the structures are almost identical to psytrance and they almost mix the in the same manner as well. There is only more breakdowns in DnB and shorter spands around the breakdowns but it mixes better because there isn't as much melody.. I also understand why Kallan needed to beef up a few of those tracks.. 2 of them sounded really low and needed a bit more kik.. :)

DeadFunk : well, it depends really.. if you like to hear songs till the end or not really. I mean, yeah, in psytrance, the punchlines are usually near the end of the tracks, as things get more intense. It might not be the same for other styles that are more loopy like techno for instance. so yeah, i can agree that it might be borning, but then again, if you like a specific style of music, that's becasue you like to hear tracks out and realise that the track is good from start to end. if not, maybe we just don't like that specific song.

One thing for sure, i would never rate a Dj on how long his tracks play out, unless they are just plain borning tracks.. but then again, i'm sure the next 20 tracks will be just as boring anyways.. lol

Davesob : very good addition to this thread.. the 32% is right on the money.. and it can't cost you more than 40% of your total debts.. meaning that if you have a bank loan and you pay 300$ a month, well, that 300$ plus the rent + heating can't be more than 40% of your salary per month !!

While we are at it, lets name those terrible Dj's please... or why not name the "good" ones...? i bet those names would change from person to person, much like everyone's idea of "what a good Dj is" in the end.

Lets change the perspective a little..

lets pretend we own a company that makes, platic cups.

now, in our company, we have the choice between a few people for hire..

here are the candidates :

1:) a guy who is very good artistically, but shy when it comes to human relations
2:) someone who is very outgoing, just graduated from Marketing school but has no experiance artistically but has lots of connections in the plastic cup departement.
3:) A very self-confident person who has no marketing background, can be creative when the time comes but has a very negative attitude in the work environment.

which one would you hire to work for you and bring in returns ?? $$$$$ !!!!

i'd take choice B !!

I don't even know why this thread was started in the first place and i REALLY don't understand how this thread turned into people complaining about people saying "you suck" !! There are alot of Dj's the deserve to know that they fucken suck behind the decks and we should be thankful that other's have the balls to throw it up in our faces. everyone has a bad night once in a while and it makes me feel good to know that even on my bad nights, people were still paying attention and notice that we can be better ; and let us know about it too..

The few people who've critic'd my sets before hardly ever come out to party anymore and all i get now is "great set man", whether i was A1 or D- !!!

I don't know about ANY ONE in this thread and how there skills are, so please, i am just discussing things, not shooting people.

On a side note and to be more on-topic, here is the answer to your original question..

Good Dj's bring people, bad Dj's don't, technicalities aside. We will just have to accept that and insted focus on how to bring people. With all this new technology (Serato, Final Skratch, LIVE), beatmatching will be secondary sooner than we expect. I read in an interview with Richi Hawtin that the industry will move away from "who's the better skilled DJ" and more towards "what they are playing / who they are / Reputation" !!

I personally find it sucks, but its takes all to make a scene and it takes both at your party to have enough cash to pay everyone. I'd rather book a non-talented DJ who plays good tracks then one who thinks he's good using Serato !!! that's just me once again !! :)

This is gonna happen in canada too and when everything will have crashed that's the time to buy boom.

In Canada, your taux variable is NEVER giving to people.. I haven't seen anyone settle for a variable rate since i've started my job here (7 months).. people take Fixed rates and that's all i would recommend !!
