last summer i was bumming in quebec city, meeting strange people and drinking beer.

then one time some guy came up to us street kids in his white van, yelling:

"who wants to go camping, do high-sea kayak and see the whales for three days, tomorrow ? all food payed... anyway, just meet me at 8am at square d'youville."

i was hanging out with myriam, whom i had met in parties in montreal, robin (from gatineau), sean (a crusty punk from kingston ontario), joey (another punk with a delightful accentfrom moncton, new-brunswick) and i had just met tony pop (from banff).

so that's how we all ended up being present at 8am, the following day. we packed our stuff, got in the van and as soon as the went we all were handed out contracts, that said: "you must not do drugs or drink alcohol for three days... blablabla" since we were paranoids, we signed under fakes names.

i forgot to mention there were strangers coming with us, most of them 40 or 50 and over. and most of them alcoholics or mentally disturbed the van guy had probably picked up at the salvation army.

after stopping on the way to pick strawberries, we got at tadoussac by dinner time. we camped at a youth hostel where incredibly nice people were staying at.

the morning after, we drove for an hour, then parked the van, got off. we were given kayaks, and started going. we did 18 kilometers on the saguenay, then got at this totally cut-off society desert island. it was gorgeous... we broke the contract by doing pcp, getting drunk on rum and smoking thousands of joints that night. yelling, we were far from being subtle.

anyway, that was one of the best random experiences that ever happened to me. it helped me being confident and letting my destiny happen, hitching through the wide country a month later. so many great people exist, and i was glad to finally realize it.
