atheist hate when you point this out, it shows that their position is not nearly as strong as they would have you believe

That's because it's an ineffable statement. Credence should not be given to those who make comments that cannot be supported by any evidence whatsoever. The same proof that is given to the existence of god can also be applied to the flying spaghetti monster, god fearing nuts have a way around this, they say "you just have to have faith", which roughly translated means "stop asking questions and just blindly believe in this".

Update » Captain.Obvious wrote on Sun Dec 16, 2007 @ 12:16pm
Taking an agnostic position on the existence of god is the same as being agnostic to whether rocks laugh at you when you're not looking.

example:

I have a magic yogurt, when I eat it, I become invisible. Unfortunately, it only works when no one is looking and I refuse to do it when anyone is conducting experiments testing the validity of said invisibility.

How many people are going to say "you're completely full of shit"? All those people are the equivalent to Atheists whereas those who say "I dunno, that doesn't seem too likely, but since I can't know for sure, I'll remain neutral and say I'm not sure" are agnostics.

saying the burden of proof is on those who doubt is basically opening the door for people to make baseless claims and giving them credence where credence is not warranted.

Militant Atheists are that way because they've been backed in to a corner by people who want to indoctrinate everyone.

I'm all for freedom. 100% in favor of freedom, even to practice whatever voodoo crap you want. But don't force your beliefs on me by making me take part in your dogma.

By the way, ridiculing and insulting someone is part of freedom. If I think your beliefs are garbage, I'm going to say so. I wont prevent you from practicing them, but there is no way I wont mock you for it.

You really need to pay attention to the difference here.

In places like the US, presidential candidates talk about Atheists as if they aren't even citizens. they constantly push gods and dogma into everyone's every day life. This sort of crap is what creates Militant Atheists who fight back.

Debating online with others about the validity of one religion over another (or none at all) is not intolerant, it's progress.

Talking is ALWAYS better than fighting (physically).

When the militant religious get angry, they kill people.

When militant atheists get angry, they throw insults.

If a serial murderer called himself a messenger of peace and love, would you be inclined to believe him based on words alone?

Saying something and doing another does not make it so.

The only religion of peace I've seen is Buddhism, where pacifism is actively taught.

Actually, from the information you've posted, it would most likely be considered manslaughter, nor murder. Murder requires the intention to kill, which isn't implied in this case - it seems more like a physical assualt which resulted in death.

did you bother reading the news?

“She got threatened by her father and her brother,” said Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson, who had known Aqsa since they both started high school together. “He said that if she leaves, he would kill her.”

[ en.wikipedia.org ]

Pantheism is the view that everything is of an all-encompassing immanent abstract God; or that the Universe, or nature, and God are equivalent. More detailed definitions tend to emphasize the idea that natural law, existence, and the Universe (the sum total of all that is, was, and shall be) is represented in the theological principle of an abstract 'god' rather than a personal, creative deity or deities of any kind. This is the key feature which distinguishes them from panentheists and pandeists. As such, although many religions may claim to hold pantheistic elements, they are more commonly panentheistic or pandeistic in nature.

Yes, most religions involve a certain amount of absurdity and delusion. Guess what, THE VAST, VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE ON THIS EARTH (whether religious or NOT) ARE FULL OF DELUSIONS and ILLUSIONS used as a buffer against the existential fears of death and aloneness. Just read some psychology.

In your case, you choose to delude yourself into thinking that religion is the root of all evil and all we need to do is convince people to be atheists and the world will be perfect. Dream on.

(And you can quote me on that)

You need to do more drugs because you don't do enough already.

Also, Einstein was a Pantheist, not even close to being a Theist.
Update » Captain.Obvious wrote on Thu Dec 13, 2007 @ 1:09pm
Hypocracy at it's worst? No. Hypocracy at it's worst would be an Atheist accusing the pious of preaching dogma, then turning around and doing the same.

Atheists attack religion, not the people who act religious. Religious people however go nuts and attack the Atheists themselves, rarely actually addressing the Atheism its self, preferring to tell Atheists that they will be going to hell for their lack of faith.

Do you like being told that you will spend an eternity in a firey pit being tortured? I've never said anything close to that to anyone religious. The worst I've ever done is tell people that they're wasting their time and the time of those they teach.

Atheists don't delude themselves into thinking the world will be utopia once religion is gone, however it is WITHOUT A DOUBT, that the world would be better off without it.

No more debates as to whether to have blood transfusions, no more snake handling, no more covering women, no more raping babies as a cure for AIDS, no more suicide bombers killing civilians, no more teaching children that their protestant friends will go to hell and that they should hate them, no more killing in the name of a god that doesn't exist.

If you disagree, I'll have to do the work of the FSM and murder you.
