Got a decent 14 hours sleep since and my ears are still ringing.. crazyness. Tagging with Na was an experience and a half I think it tunred out well all things considered, SCRATCH PSYCORE!!!FTW!! I'm sure if the gear was still plugged in as it was before the party started it could have even been a bit better. THE HEAT.. OMG. Good thing I hadnt unpacked my bag since Eclipse a few weeks earlier and still had 3 dry t-shirts snuggled away in there. I think I almost died of heat stroke, it was so bad at some points that it was impossible to concentrate and I completely forgot what I was doing. After the set I realised I had old man hands like when you stay in the bath too long, I was drenched!! Things in my pockets would have probably had a better chance in the washing machine! Notice to the owners of the room and future promoters..XTRA FANS 4 THE DJ'S!! pleaaaaase!!! :P. I had a great time hanging out with Lee and getting to know Na a bit better.. Props to Oussam for the big move, I'm very proud of you! cool chats with Rad, Nuclear, Moondancer, Naian and thanks to Mr. Keyminder for sharing the dancefloor fan with us from time to time throughout the set, muchly appreciated, respect! All in all a sweet dig, thanks to Alakazoo for saving the night and thanks to everyone for coming out. Looking forward for the next installment. peace -K

Didyman: perhaps you might have a point but I've met more than a handful of people with diplomas who still havnt got a clue, not to mention will be broke as fuck for the next 5-10 years thanks to loans. I think the plan would be to study music on your own as a full time passion and consider the diploma a hobby..not the other way around like most people do it. That way you come out much more educated than most who depend on a piece of paper that they aquired simply by being good sheep 20 hours a week. all that being said.. I guess it really depends on what you mean by "work in music".. I know this guy who mops the floor and empties the waste baskets in a professional studio.. Im pretty sure he tells the ladies that he works in music.

The booking thing is personal. The higher up the chain you go the more important it becomes it would appear. I try to give partygoers the best experience possible by renting the highest quality rigs I can get my hands on and booking dj who will put it all to proper use. Not everyone maintains these values unfortunately. When I charge to play I feel it is my duty to uphold my reputation aswell as the promoters by playing the highest quality set I can at all times. Mp3 exceptions would go to unreleased material and or fresh cuts that must be played before I can get my hands on the origional, but more often that not its alot like shooting myself in the foot because there is a noticeable drop in dancefloor energy when an Mp3 is mixed to a .Wav, the sound just doesnt compare and the big drop comes in weak... not to mention on the flip side of it when im mixing out of the .mp3.. the next track in .wav just destroys it with seemingly overpowering frequencies creating an overall unbalanced set. Over the years Ive seen many dj's play out mp3's in lower grade parties yet purchase their music for larger more important gigs. I find it alot easier to be ready at all times to deliver the merchandise, the worst that can happen is your set will sound a tad better than most others provided you mix like a demon. I believe that conciously or subconciously the crowd hone in on the phenomenon and over time it becomes what sets you apart from the pack.

I'm not sure how beatport functions, maybe its up to the individual label if they want to sell the origional .wav or not, perhaps forcing you to buy the whole album elsewhere if you want the higher quality, but in my experience theres always an option next to the track that basically states for a minimal fee extra you can download the .wav. usually its 1$ more. check it out, its well worth it.

It all comes down to how seriously you want to take it all and how far you want to go with it. Promotion does count for alot, so you do see many underqualified dj's raking it in playing mp3's but I think this is a less than admirable approach. I like the idea of putting all odds in my favour by atleast rocking it out there with the best material I can get my hands on and being able to respond when called upon at all times in any given situation.

Update » Br34th3 wrote on Fri Aug 24, 2007 @ 2:11am
I think there are alot of consumer grade dj products out there that cater to the appartment party dj/bedroom beginner djs needs thus supporting the mp3 format...its great for playing around on but its getting harder and harder not to confuse this low standard with professional gear in large part due to marketing tactics.
Update » Br34th3 wrote on Fri Aug 24, 2007 @ 2:20am
just found this: FinalScratch® is the ultimate way for DJs to combine today's digital technology with the analog control of the past. By using FinalScratch with your existing turntables or CD player and mixer, you can control and manipulate digital audio files (WAV, MP3, etc.) the same way you always have—using your hands to cue, mix and scratch with the exact response and feel of real vinyl. so you should be able to mix .Wav's with your final scratch setup. Honestly I would have found it really bizarre if you couldnt.

actually what I need right now is more Dj's respecting their vocation, notably sound quality, so record labels will stop jerking their artists around over album sales and distribution issues.

I mean if your going to promote yourself as a professional dj and charge money for your performance, wouldnt it be best to put all advantages on your side?

What I meant earlier by kicking things off, is the mutual respect between label rep/promoter and the dj. As a promoter Id hate to think I was paying someone the big bucks to drop lesser quality music and as a label owner I dont think having my djs have the reputation for being Mp3 djs is an ideal situation in any sence. why not get these issues out of the way by going quality from the start?

Update » Br34th3 wrote on Thu Aug 23, 2007 @ 10:33pm
lemme ask you all this.. would you produce a tune using mp3 samples? .. if not why.. and for the same reason, why on earth would you want to play out an mp3 as a dj?...
Update » Br34th3 wrote on Thu Aug 23, 2007 @ 10:44pm
Just thinking about it.. if your spinning a whole set in mp3 the quality will be pretty constant so I can easily see noone noticing. Now say you were to throw a few wav's in here and there in contrast to the Mp3's, I can guarantee youll notice the difference, the few times I've done it was more than enough to convince me never to do it again.

Even if the kick and bass arent happening at the same time, like in most of the music I write, that little "duck" is still very effective in giving the whole thing a "bounce" .. using the tc native bundle.. drop the sidechainer on your kick and the compressor deesser on your bassline. Try setting attack to 0 release to 0, ratio to roughly 1.4 and then play with the threshold.
