I'm all for supporting artists but:
Unless you've never in your life downloaded an mp3/wav/ogg/mp2/mov/wma/wmv "illegaly", who are you to tell anyone else not to do it?

No one and I mean no one should be making mad cash for anything, ever. Mad money makers are directly responsible for the poverty in the world.

Besides, money doesn't make you happy, hopefully making and sharing music with people you love will, and charging them for that pleasure is just as evil as stealing music. Furthermore, most labels pay artist pennies on 20$ CDs, that's a nice big FAIL right there.
Seriously though, the reality of internet based music sharing isn't a new phenomenon, if you release a worthwhile album, it will be pirated, getting mad about it is pretty immature imo. It's like, how did he not see this coming?

And if you can't tour, well you obviously don't have enough of a following to support that and that's nobody's fault but you're own for not being mainstream or 'good' enough.
Brian Eno and Boards of Canada aren't the type of groups you'd expect to make a living from their music, it's way too weird (good, but common, weird).
Besides, with globalization and the ease with which it is to record a decent album and distribute it, it only makes sense that the price of music has fallen to virtually 0.
This is about passion, creativity and the love of music. None of those things should be dependent on money.
