Would the SP-404 be useful for psytrance production at all? Is it rendered obsolete by VSTs and the like? I'm looking for some hardware that will make my production sound and 'feel' better. Would anybody suggest that I do or don't buy it, knowing what they know?

There's nothing wrong with wanting someone who's emotions you can predict and who you can manipulate for the better. Manipulations is too often used as a negative term. Sometimes it is ok to decide what's best for someone, especially if they would tend to agree with you with enough context and explanation. There's a big difference between being manipulated and just having an open mind. Some younger people's minds are more open by default and would listen more to someone with a little bit of wisdom, of course age has nothing to do with open mindedness in general... or does it?
Think about your parents and how 'open' they are to things they don't understand.
