I don't know how they treat their employees either, but do you know anyone who's ever gotten something as cool (yeah I find them real cool) as an iPod shuffle... just like that, in November...
although it prolly is an xMas thing, it's a month early and it's a product that was JUST released, so this is no 'let's get rid of our old shit' scheme.
Also, you brought up a good point, but the fact is there was 'no' press release, I found that info on a rumor site. So apple isn't even using this to make themselves look good, there's not even announcing it. Although they might later on.
Again though, this is NOT a great thing for shareholders so it's really not press release worthy.

The other estimate was that every employee would have it by the end of November... but again you're making it seem like you expected Apple to give their employees anything at all. I mean, the employees have decent salaries as it is and giving them each a top notch mp3 player is completely gratuitous.
Also, after doing some quick research, i've found that the flash memory in the shuffle alone costs Apple roughly 35$, I won't even mention R&D but the other components including earphones and packaging will make the unit cost at the absolute very least 40$. Which doubles your figure to 600,000$. Apple, although a very large corporation now, is in no way massive compared to other players in the field who, as far as I know, do not give every single employee their brand new product.
Now take that 600,000$ and factor in the shipping, overhead and R&D costs and the figure jumps to well over 1,000,000$ total for this 'gift'. [sarcasm]Of course, a million dollars is nothing to a massive corporation, they probably throw that much away on coffee beans every week![/sarcasm]
But either way, it doesn't matter how much it costs the company, I don't think investors are happy that Apple is giving their employees anything at all for free and so the less it cost Apple to do this, the better for the company. The important part if the gesture itself. No it's not their high end mp3 player, but the employees do no 'need' an mp3 player, they were giving one as a gift, and THAT is what I find cool. Can anyone here actually say they wouldn't be happy to get a new shuffle for free? I am damned healous myself. Could just be me though...
