Info: | Thursday April 20th 2006 Onaversal, Student Magazine, Sleeman's & Rough and Rugged Entertainment Present: WOMEN ON WAX Attacks Ottawa!! W.O.W. is a monthly evening of female dj power! Founded by djs jasmine and cyan, Women On Wax is a growing collective that plays host to up and coming talent from Montreal and beyond. JASMINE (WOW - Montreal) DJ Jasmine finds it troublesome to describe exactly what she plays as a DJ due to her ridiculously varied musical tastes and collection. Her style is definitely on the old school funky tip, and her love affair with heavy bass is hard to miss. But what does she actually play? Jasmine's sets are an ambitious mix of breaks/ various styles of breakbeat, dub/roots reggae, dancehall, jungle, hip-hop, grime, and dubstep. Secretly wishing the world was one big booty party, Jasmine also plays hip-house, dance party rap, ghetto tech, booty house, as well as some acid and funky / disco-influenced early 90's house. Just to warn you, she has also been known to play Indian bhangra, latino/ cubano son, reggaeton, disco, African funk, random 80's music, rockabilly and rock'n'roll. Jasmine's DJ career began at Trent Radio, the Trent University college radio station in Peterborough, Ontario. Holding down various weekly music shows, she became a part of the community radio team for years to come. Her favorites were her dub and roots reggae show, as well as Mixed & Twisted, which was an experiment in simultaneously mixing and layering as many sounds as humanly possible. Regularly playing parties and bars in and around Peterborough, Jasmine moved to Montreal in July of 2004, entering a new world of musical possiblities. In Montreal, Jasmine has played numerous venues including Blizzarts, Blue Dog, Salon Daome, Buddha Bar, Station C, Saphir's Mix Thursdays and Missy Bar. A consistent involvement with independent circus artists, and circus cabarets/parties has also led her to collaborate with Cirque Du Soleil, Carnaval Carmagnole, and Duo Hoops, to name a few, often making personalized musical mixes for artists' performances. Whether DJing in the trendiest urban clubs or underground loft parties, Jasmine's love for collecting and playing music continues to propell her into new and exciting environments, and her ability to meet the challenge of varied audiences has gained her widespread respect throughout Quebec and Ontario. CYAN (WOW - Montreal) DJ, radio host and producer Cyan aka Corina MacDonald has been an active participant in Montreal’s electronic music scene since her arrival in the city in 1996. From that time she has been involved in community radio, hosting electronic music shows on CKUT 90.3 fm. Currently she hosts modular_systems, an electronic music magazine show focusing on local artists, djs and events. Cyan has been active in organizing events with the [ phoniq.net ] Robo/tek and Women on Wax crews. Cyan is known for her techno and house sets – she has a broad knowledge of music and is equally happy playing hard tech, minimal tec/house, Chicago house or old Detroit electro. Her dj sets are layered, deep rhythmic explorations into the intersections of techno, house and electro. They can be heady and abstract, hard and slamming, or funky and soulful. She djs regularly at events around Montreal, and has played at festivals and events in Toronto and in France. modular systems is broadcast on tuesdays from 1500-1700 est on CKUT 90.3 fm or online at [ www.ckut.ca ] DJ RUE (WOW - Montreal) DJ Rue loves drum and bass enough to be willing to destroy it. Born Camille, she was given a pair of hand-me-down turntables at 14. With a disregard to the politics surrounding DJ-ing, Rue began to mix samples from pop music and everyday life into the fragmented noises that her heroes were producing. Raised in the 4-4 heavy city of Chicago, Rue took the soul of house and combined it with the funky and urban sounds of DNB, switching from ear-bleeding hard-step to techno-phile electro-step without missing a beat. Rue gives her audience a constant feeling of “Oh-no she di’int” and “Ooh lord, yes she did!” Now 20 years old, her mixing skills have been honed, her tech 12s are brandished, and her love of experimentation is entirely changing the every day kicks and snares we are used to. Now living in Montreal, she is willing to take on conventional drum and bass and is taking no prisoners. Rue is an individual determined to take drum and bass to the next level – a place where all sounds come together harmoniously and flee chaotically. [ djruelovesyou.com ] DIRTY DAN (WOW - Montreal) Born into a musical family in Edmonton, Canada in 1979, Danielle Landreville was playing piano by the age of two, performing publicly by the age of three, and had attained the Royal Conservatory of Music’s highest degree of proficiency by the age of sixteen. Discovering electronic music by 1996, her evolution as a DJ and producer was greatly advanced by her subsequent move to Montreal in the winter of 2000. Although originally inspired by artists such as Aphex Twin or DJ Rap, her interests soon broadened from jungle and DnB to include techno, breaks, and especially booty and ghetto-tech. By 2003 Danielle was DJing regularly and, finding herself increasingly immersed in Montreal’s burgeoning underground electronic music community, began organizing raves and club nights with the Charlie Company collective, introducing to the city’s scene such innovative concepts as turntablism, with 2004’s breakbeat event Demz Da Breaks, or ghetto-tech, with 2005’s Konnekt. In addition to her regular involvement in Montreal’s Women On Wax events and Saphir’s Mix Thursday, 2006 sees Dirty Dan devoting more time to production and songwriting while continuing her pursuit of discovering, buying and mixing the dirtiest beats known to womankind. RUBY JANE (House of Kitsch / WOW - Montreal) Although she never really touched a musical instrument in her life (except maybe the triangle in kindergarten), Ruby Jane came to music through her ten years of dance instruction and her lifelong passion for poetry and lyrics. In 2003, when she agreed to help promote a successful weekly called “Culture Thursdays” with a friend in Ottawa, she found herself itching to get off the dance floor and get behind the turntables. 8 months later she played her first official gig: the last Culture Thursday ever. Back in those funked out days, Ruby Jane gained her initial recognition from playing quirky art events at SAW gallery in Ottawa. When other promoters warmed to her particular taste for beats that run the gamut of soul (funk with a preference for female vocals, classic and oldschool hip hop, breaker anthems, sexy downtempo), she was soon booked all over Ottawa and later gained a residency at the successful Hump Wednesdays at Helsinki Nightclub. Within this time she teamed up with fellow DJ Zattar and new-media artist Darsha Hewitt to form the House of Kitsch crew. This team promoted creatively-themed musical events complete with silly retro audiovisuals. When she landed in Montreal in July 2005, Ruby Jane’s funk repertoire was well received and she was especially pleased to be taken under the wing of the female DJ collective, Women on Wax. Constantly building her collection of soul-inspired records, Ruby Jane aspires to keep helping people get down with their bad selves on the dancefloors of Montreal and the world at large.
