At volume x this November 24 is the wonderfully dark and relentless music of Hector Oaks, who is by all measures one of the most interesting artists to have emerged from a city not exactly sparsely populated by interesting artists. The Berlin-made, Madrid-born Bassiani resident, perhaps best known for his 10+ hour vinyl only sets at the Georgian institution, has only been heard locally twice before. No less interesting is the Montreal debut of x3butterfly, who, for orientation, is a Mexican-American producer born in Detroit and based in New York, and before that California and Europe. It is no overstatement to say that their musical variation neatly conjures a range of cultural influences that speak to the many languages of nightlife, from the more serious and more complex to the ones that welcome in more light. In all cases, nothing but pleasure! Another highlight of this late autumn afternoon: Runa and Asha. The DJ duo, originally from Toronto, are, in a particularly refreshing way, quickly becoming the spirit of Montreal’s underground dancefloor, whether as dancers and enthusiasts, or through their community building label ‘Ether’, or with their vibrant and diverse - but with a preference for the bass-heavy - DJ sets; now at volume x for the first time. Solitary Dancer, on the other hand, return for their third, this edition providing an opportunity for them to showcase a different side of their artistry. The joint project by Anthony Galati and Adam Hogins has become known for, it must be emphasized, their extremely elegant track architecture in both release and performance. A year ago today they closed our seated experimental room with Circlesquare’s ‘Filtering Blue’, a track that ends abruptly at the peak of its emotional 8-minute build. |
