Info:About Jem Rolls:

Edinburgh-based Performance-Poet and Broadcaster Jem Rolls’ 2003 tour of Canada was an unprecedented success. Amongst other highpoints his entire show was bought by CBC’s Definitely Not The Opera. It was, apparently, the most successful solo poetry tour of Canada since Leonard Cohen.

No other country allows a performer to arrive in a city, do a succession of hour shows in the same festival as a whole diverse bunch of good bad and brilliant shows, get collective press attention, build up an audience through the days, keep all the money, and then rush off and do the same somewhere westwards… And again. And again. For a whole summer.

And the shows were amazing. Much of the audience had never seen anything like it. And had never imagined there could be anything like it.

Jem received numerous five star reviews, sold-out virtually his entire Winnipeg run, had his whole show bought by CBC, and had more fun than he’d ever had in his life before. Which is not bad at 41. So he’d be a total mug not to come back.

Jem is a veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – and for years ran the only functioning poetry cabaret on the Fringe there. He loved it so much he moved there. Big Word, the poetry cabaret he established and co-runs, has revolutionised the Scottish performance poetry scene in three very fast and full years. Jem is frequently on BBC Radio Scotland as poet, commissioned poet, pundit and reviewer.

Reviews:

"Captivating - there’s no other word for it – Jem Rolls is captivating - a rousing success, the pump-action poet

– brash and funny, dynamo delivery sets the pace - hilarious send-up of right-wing England’s perception of world history –

kept his packed audience utterly transfixed" -Scotsman

"Hilarious and slyly clever… If only performance poetry were always this mesmerizing or this much fun! …

Dramatic Toronto debut… knockout poems… nothing short of magnetic… "yes but is it theatre?" I hear .

Who cares when its this much fun?" -Toronto Eye.

"Has the rapid-word power to restore flavour and meaning to a language hijacked to inert stupor by inane newspeak

and incessant adtalk … "poems" doesn’t quite cover it, more like verbal thunderballs…

A must-see for anyone interested in the limits of language and the power of poetry…" -Montreal Gazette

"Performance stripped bare … I don’t know how to describe it because I’ve never seen anything like it …

had the audience in the palm of his hand … delightful sense of quirky metaphor… A real treat" ***** -CBC Radio

Who knew poetry could be this dynamic hilarious and riveting?… combines a rapid fire verbalism

with a kinetic stage presence that will amaze … politically pointed and astute verse …

turn of phrase will delight wordsmiths … the very definition of good word of mouth" ***** -Winnipeg Free Press

"Hugely entertaining" -National Post
