Forward - Two Years! - Slim Pickins, Jaimie Sho, Golgo 13 And Risk [ Static Link : iCal ]
City:Canada, Quebec, Montreal
Time:Thu Jun 3, 2010 @ 10:00pm till Fri Jun 4, 2010 @ 3:00am
Description:Forward started in the summer of 2008 as platform to promote underground electronic music, filling the absence of a weekly rendez-vous for the alternative club scene. Originally thought out to be a hosting ground for drum’n’bass, jungle, breaks and dubstep, Forward grew and evolved into a night made to showcase a wide array of genres and scenes working with a variety of different crews and artists such as Loetech, Sixtoo, DZ, Datsik, Spor and Plastician, to name a few.

Dubstep remains a central focus but Forward is also about bringing people of different musical backgrounds together to open their minds to different styles. By inviting over 75 different guest djs on the span of the last year, Forward gets people to enjoy and discover new artists.

Forward is
Rhys Taylor, a nightlife legend who has been playing alongside big names of the international electronic music scene in Montreal for almost 10 years now. Holding down "Your Radio is Broken" on CKUT for the past 5 years, throwing Mix Thursdays for almost 3 years, a residency at Blue Dog, Saphir and then Blizzarts with Broken Crew and bringing breaks to Stereo are a few of his accomplishments.

David Rawalia aka Wally, a dj who has been mastering his craft since 2003 and more recently producing his own unique sounds. After promoting rave culture and sound and organizing a multitude of one-off all-nighters, he moved on to the dubstep scene taking full-part in the forward weekly as well as participating in other events such as soma and bassdrive.

dj Slim Pickins (Calgary)

One half of the Supreme Hustle dj duo and an original Boodang Music Canada DJ, Slim Pickins is always on the grind. His passion for music stems from the combination of a varied musical upbringing and a heavy exposure to urban music at a young age. Deep ties to the world of hip hop, breakbeats and funk led Slims to take his place behind the turntables and since then there has been no looking back. A decade of drums later has brought Slim into the upper echelon of breakbeat culture as a result of timeless performances as a dj, a respected history as a promoter & in recent years an up and coming producer. A new focus on showcasing the heavyweight bass sound that has taken the West Coast by storm saw the launch of Supreme Hustle for 2009. Teaming with the likes of 12th Planet (LA), TRILL BASS (LA/ATL), Excision (BC) & Datsik (BC), The Supreme Hustle is intent on bringing the low end movement out to the masses by combining bassbin shattering beats, B-boy breaks & irie riddims into a dancefloor friendly format. Armed with deep crates stocked full of an upfront selection of funky tunes from all genres, Slims strives to create a energetic and unique vibe. Incorporating mainly reggae, dancehall, hiphop and dubwise influences with a touch of soul, jazz and funk into his performances, SP prides himself on a versatile style that seamlessly blends all styles of bass heavy music. Showcasing his sounds and skills on the wheels of steel at various events in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Nelson, Victoria, Whistler, Kelowna, Kamloops Golden, Saskatoon, Halifax, Winnipeg and the Kootenays has gained Slim Pickins the reputation as one of Canada's favorite party rockin' djs, a reputation which continues to grow exponentially with each new musical endeavor. His trademark sound has gone international on more than a few occasions with SP touching down in America and New Zealand to spread his heavyweight bass vibes. This seasoned veteran's notorious skills have shared the stage with the full spectrum of the worlds finest live performers and turntable technicians such as Mix Master Mike, Dj Craze, Donald Glaude, Rye Rye, Dj Swamp, Caspa, Rusko, Plastician, 12th Planet, Stupid Fresh, Dj Rectangle, Dieselboy, Ghislain Poirier, DJ Zinc, South Rakkas Crew, Shamik The Human Beatbox, Smalltown Djs, Freaky Flow, Shy Fx, Mat The Alien, DZ, Ill Gates, Sweatshop Union & Babylon System to name a few. Prepare yourself for Slims' notorious high energy sets in a dancefloor mashup featuring the sounds of dubstep, electro, breakbeats, glitchhop, hiphop, reggae & various other forms of funk for your rump!

Jamie Sho (Calgary)

Jamie Sho (Aka Jordan Michon) began DJing and promoting electronic music in Ottawa Canada in 1998. He grew his roots in Oldschool Ragga-Jungle and Funky Breaks but wiith the incredibly fast and strong emergence of Electro over the past few years and the growing exploitation of the bassline, he found himself lost between the world of breakbeats and 4/4. Jamie's love of breakbeats, exaggerated basslines and powerful vocals kept him focused on a certain underground sound which for lack of a better label he simply called "durty beats".

Like so many other DJs and producers in the past few years Jamie has found himself deeply intrigued by the depth and dimention some say was introduced to the electronic world through Dubstep and with his Electro tendancies leaning towards the Bassline it's no big surprise that Jamie's Wonk would someday become a Wobble.

Reaching back towards the genre that ignited his passion for electronica Jamie's Dubstep sets are usually loaded with oldschool ragga flavour and massive basslines that would bring the lion out in any of us but with many genres under his belt and a huge musical appetite you never know what to expect aside from complete dancefloor destruction.

Jamie has been crushing venues from St.John's Newfoundland to Hawaii in the past years as one half of the electro/bassline duo TheDurtz and since moving to Calgary and making the transition into the dub world has become a member of The Supreme Hustle along side some serious badmen such as Mark Instinct, Slim Pickins, La Rose, Phatcat & Marxxx. You can catch him in Honolulu,Whitehorse, Canmore, Saskatoon, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Moncton, Halifax & St.John's during his May/June Major League Bass Ball tour along side Supreme Hustle don Slim Pickins.

Risk (LIVE)

Risk is a live dubstep ensemble filling the gap between the traditional band, the electronic live act and the dj set. It blends all the possibilites of electronic music into one non-stop high-energy performance.

Risk tunes start out on a laptop as purely elecronic, mostly dubstep tunes. These tracks then get all risked up, changing up the drum, basslines and adding vocals. At that point it gets somewhat complicated to classify. Gen brings R'n'B, soul and pop influence, Plecko, reggae rythms, Sourultrafast part death metal part funk and wally... well he doesn't want you to know but he used to be a psytrance dj. Hard to describe how it sounds like but somehow, it all becomes coherent when coming at you in the form of heavy bass music.
