My second event, and my last as a part of Phase productions. As was the case with Release, Synergy wasn't even a twinkle in my eye at the time Adam and I threw this event, but I'm including it because I did indeed throw it, and I consider every event that I promoted now as being related to the company that has shaped my life. Anyways, I was still extremely wet behind the ears as to the ways of throwing parties. We got a shitload of Toronto djs to come to Ottawa for a really low price, and loaded them into two mini-vans to save money on transportation too. Things got kind of hairy since as I said we didn't really know what we were doing and we gave some locals better timeslots than the djs who had driven 5 hours from Toronto. But I didn't get to deal with that because I landed the 'oh so fun job' of dealing with the police. Although I didn't know it at the time, this was the first time I'd get to meet Louise Logue, who is the Child Services officer for Ottawa and an officer that we as 'rave' promoters deal with on a regular basis since our events are all ages.
Before I go on with the police story, I'll start things off with another story. I'd invited my parents out to see this event, just as I had for Release. They came at around 11pm and as they were coming in, some girl passes out in the line waiting to get into the party. My mom used to be a nurse, so she took care of the girl as we called an ambulance, but it was not a pleasant situation to have to put my parents through and I think is unfortunately the big memory my mother now has of my events. This was the last time she ever came to an event I organized.
Anyways, standard procedure whenever an ambulance is called is that a police cruiser also comes. And once the police officer realized it was a 'rave' going on, he called in backup! 5 cop cars including the dog van (which I'm proud to say we've had at 4 of our events over the years!) show up, along with the most aggressive police officer I've ever met : Louise Logue. As soon as she arrives she starts telling me about how the event is getting shut down, how I'm going to be lucky if I don't go to jail, and how I'm going to get a massive fine for holding a public gathering in an industrially zoned area. The venue was an auctioning house that was indeed in an industrial area, but had been zoned commercial/industrial and legal for groups of up to 600 people to be in at one time. We informed her of this and she got really mad and wandered back to the police cars. Five minutes later she returned and said "We're going inside. If we so much as *smell* any pot, this event is OVER."
I never knew why she was so pissed off at the time. Later on I learned that the owner of the venue had some known connections with drug dealers so this may have been why. Also, from future dealings with Louise I've heard some pretty insane stories about stuff that happens at raves and things that she's dealt with personally involving youths and drugs. But even from the beginning I've always had a very strict policy on drugs, a very strict policy on security, and a very set focus on the safety of people who attend my events. I've always felt that it was unfair that legitimate promoters like myself were treated with as much disrespect as the sleaze bags that throw events specifically to sell drugs. However, at the time I was 19 years old and not very good at expressing my positive promoting ethics to a group of cops who obviously wouldn't believe me. All they saw was some young kid throwing a big drug event.
Anyways, the cops go through and don't find anything (as is with every time the cops go into one of our events looking for drugs). They leave with the standard 'If we come back, we're shutting this down.' In a spontaneously ballsy mood I told them if we needed to call another ambulance we would, and they wouldn't be shutting us down for taking care of our customers. Go me!
