BUDDA BLAZE:

DJ BuddaBlaze A.K.A Akwirenhtha (Falling Tree) was born a Kanieh'kehaka (Mohawk) of Kahna:wake in the late 70's. Both Budda's parents were industrious. Budda's mother has been a teacher for the last 25 years, and Budda's father did every thing from working hi-steel across turtle Island for 24 years to various independent businesses he still runs today. Budda's parents had a summer home in up-state New York , where upon his weekly visits in the mid 80's he discovered MTV and got his 1 st real introduction to popular music. Metal, classic rock and popular hip-hop of the time all peaked his interest.

In winter 89' Budda received his 1 st guitar and his brother as well as a friends older brother soon showed him the basics. In 91' he joined his first band, a all native four piece metal out-fit that originally began doing old Metallica and other cover songs, They later changed the name of their band in 94' to D.F.M (Different Frame of Mind) and started playing original material. After a few demo's the group disbanded in 97'. Budda was looking for a new musical outlet, Enter Chief Rok, through Kahna:wake friends and pioneering MC's Grim, juggernaut and Johnny Jooks Budda met Chief. The leader and one of the founding members of FBIJedeyez (Fuckin' Badass Indian Jedeyez). Chief Rok would breakdown to Budda the very elements of hip-hop, its origins, its history and how the music was created and how it was produced. Budda would quickly save up to purchase turntables, a mixer, a sampler and other recording equipment. Chief a wandatt from the northern territory of turtle Island , had started FBIJedeyez years earlier in the late 80's with members from various territories on turtle Island . Having already toured u.s and Canada with DFM, Budda would now pack his bags and the road as a member of the FBIJedeyez in the name of hip-hop. Their 99' single “Justice” quickly became a cult classic and established the FBIJedeyez as a serious hip-hop out-fit.

Around the same time Budda began working at Kahna:wake's K103.7 FM as the host of the afternoon drive show, as well the 5 hour hip hop extravaganza called “the Friday night block party”. Working in radio since the early 90's at k103 on and off as well as college radio, Budda still host the shows today. Budda had now found a way to marry his love for hip hop and rock.

In 2001 he competed in the Montreal DMC, although not placing he had only entered to prove to himself he was able to wreck shop for 6 mins. Later that year, Budda joined Flow (of the famed under pressure events), Orion / Revolution and Patwreck (of Montreal 's Shades of Culture hip hop out-fit) on CKUT Radio McGill's Famed underground hip hop show Off The Hook. Budda now moonlighted on 2 radio stations doing what he loved and began making a name for himself in the Mont Real scene.

In 2002 After independently releasing the FBIJedeyez EP “Prelude To Prophecy” Budda took a leave of absence from his tenure at K-103 and enrolled in McGill's Ratiwana'nirats, an intense year long Mohawk literacy program. Formed to help foster more speaker in the Kanieh'kehaka (Mohawk) communities schools, the course was hugely supported and has began a 2 nd year of class's. After graduating from the McGill courses he returned to K-103, in another afternoon shot done almost entirely in the Kanieh'keha (Mohawk) language.

A couple years ago after working the local scene Budda helped begin “L'Eighties Night” at Club Jupiter room with his “off The Hook” partner Orion and eventually cultivated a theme night that has become a word of mouth sensation . It has won accords in the Montreal Mirror newspaper's “Best of Montreal”. Incidentally their :off The Hook” program on CKUT would also be voted 2 years in a row as “best radio show” as well.
