What an event. With only 2 weeks to go before the event, our original venue (which later became our venue for Eternal) cancelled on us because of a conflicting booking for another non-rave related event. We scrambled to find a replacement venue in time and I guess we scrambled so hard we found two: Club 196 and the Pyramid (also known as the old Atomic venue). 196 had been running as an all ages hip hop club until someone got stabbed, so they were excited to have the opportunity to deal with a slightly less violent demographic. Pyramid was in some sort of wierd owner switchup that eventually fell apart, and we somehow managed to walk in at just the right time and talk to just the right person to have things squeak through. So all of a sudden we have this crazy combination of positive things : We're running smoking hot after a killer event, Ascension. We've just secured the old Atomic venue, one of the most beloved venues ever. And we have a killer lineup that has everyone more excited than they've been in a long time. People were simply stoked that there was a 'rave' scene again, and now we had all the ingredients to pull off the best rave Ottawa has seen in way too long.
And deliver we did. The event went off, large. Although there was a lot of wackiness with the two venue system (Atomic was in the basement and first floor of the building, and 196 was directly above it on the second floor), once 2:30 rolled around and it was free reign to go anywhere, the entire place seemed to fill up and it was complete positive mayhem - the dancefloors were packed and everyone was smiling.
On a side note, I got to spend a large portion of the evening out on the sidewalk making sure you idiot people STAYED on the sidewalk and didn't hang out in the street or across the street by the hotel. You would think it wasn't that hard to keep people from hanging out in the middle of a busy downtown street where there was a very good chance of getting run down by a drunken idiot, but it turned out to be very difficult. So difficult in fact that the police almost shut us down because they saw the risk too. In fact, the police were so impressed that we were having an all night dance event at the old Atomic (which was notorious for all sorts of late night hijinx and trouble for them) that they decided to throw me in a police cruiser and threaten to kill me if they had to come back again. Actually, 'them' is not a fair assessment. The majority of the police were okay with what was going on, and were helpful in telling me exactly what they wanted to make the situation okay. It was Officer Lamothe specifically that decided to make a point of threatening my life and all that fun stuff.
But in the end, it's just a really good story I tell, one of my many 'war stories'. The key point of all this is people had a great time and if you ask many people when the rave scene in Ottawa came back in full force, they'd say Overload.
